Anybody looking for a Coon Hound?
I have a Walker Treeing Coon Hound that needs a home. He's a year old and has papers. Seems to have a good nose and focus but he's never been trained to hunt. We agreed to try and keep him for a friend, but he hunts our cats which my wife won't hear of, other than that; he gets along with our other dog, isn't agressive and doesn't seem to be a problem dog at all. He stays in a crate at night with no messes and has never made a mess in the house. He likes being around people, is pretty well mannered, doesn't bark/howl too much and stays around the house pretty good. I think he'd make a good family dog too. It really makes me sad to let him go, I'd like to find him a good home.
Give me a shout if you're interested.
PS: On the cats; we've gotten him to not chase them in the house, but he roams the house sniffing them out. Outside cats are another thing, I don't think he'll kill them, but he sure will tree them.
Good luck in your search. Maybe a post on craigslist? A year old registered hound treeing cats is a desirable thing...too bad I'm not closer. I think you're doing the right thing as that hound was bred to hunt and given the chance I'd bet one of the feline pets would not fare so well.
ETA this fellow... Quarterbore... has a post in the coonhound or bloodhound thread...he is a PA resident and is the owner of another fine looking Walker. Hope this helps.
I really would like to find somebody that would hunt him, he's a real nice dog.
I got to reading the Hog thread and just realized today that I have a good pair for hog hunting ( ignoring the fact that they might not have the inclination and that there are no hogs near here LOL). I have a coon hound and a rotty pit mix bitch. She's little and colored like a rottie. He has the nose and she gets a grip on stuff and just tuggs away. It's pretty funny; when they play the hound dominates her, but if she get's her panties in a twist she will whip his a$$. They're both food posessive, but if he tries to take hers ( doesn't happen any more!!!!!!!!!) she will fight him to a standstill. The last time she left him yelping and nursing an injured leg.
I take Maggie to work with me and everybody thinks she's such a sweet little dog. Yeah right, when the flag goes down she's all teeth and fur.
It's a shame, I don't think there's anything around here to hunt them on as a pair. ( and I don't really think the three of us are tough enough for hogs!!)
Walkers are good dogs, you can break that one off the cats if you try. It will tree everything else though.
