 Generator won't idle

I've got a Troy-Bilt 5500 watt generator with a 10hp Briggs and Stratton engine with some issues. I can start it up fine on full choke but when I idle down the engine dies. Doesn't matter how long I let it idle or how slow I try to decrease the choke. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

edit:

It obviously has spark so you have to look in the fuel/air mixture arena.

Air filter is clean. Spark plug was changed about 4 months ago. The fuel is probably 3 months old.

Same here, but mine won't even start. I can spray start ether into the carburetor and it runs a few seconds. I really am getting tired of cleaning jets.

drain the gas, get something ethanol free (exxon mid-grade), try again

or at least top it off or shake up the gas. these days, most fuel is 10% ethanol. ethanol will soak up its entire weight in water over time. so you got 10 gallons of 10% ethanol gas, you got 1 gallon of ethanol. you let it sit long enough, and you got 8 gallons of gas and 2 gallons of bullshit.

if it runs on full choke, let it run until it uses up the shit gas.

Remove carburetor float bowl, remove pilot jet, clean jet and re-install.
Set mixture screw at around 1.5 turns out, initially.
Replace spark plug, even if it LOOKS okay.
Fill tank with FRESH GASOLINE.
Start engine, when fully warmed up, adjust mixture screw as necessary for smoothest op.

this + 1

but first run some seafoam through the genny, to see if if clears it out. If not, follow the steps above.

This is what I would do.

fullpower is dead on if fresh gas & a new spark plug don't solve your problem. i guess seafoam's worth a try, personally, i don't use it

Try this thread over in the SF:

a cheap and easy fix would be to run some seafoam through it, if that does not work I vote for the carb directions mentioned above.

Thanks guys for the help. Especially the link. I'll work on it this weekend.

Definitly drop the bowl see if there is any crap/sediment at the bottom. Wipe it out, make sure the float works smoothly(no sticking or binding). You can try any carb/Fuel Inj cleaner once you used the old gas to start a campfire. With this ethanol crap in the tanks I highly recommend using Super unleaded in all your small engine tools. This gas holds up better with time in your chainsaws, generators, mowers, etc.

One other thing to check is to make sure the bolts that secure the carb to the engine are snug. any small engine vibrates and bolts will loosen over time
some times only an 1/8 turn makes a difference if its sucking too much air.

Definitely follow everyone else advise with only one recommendation of my own. I'd go get a small bottle of STP GAS TREATMENT or similar and dump it in your gas can.

I did mine last year, it was a clogged jet from old gas and it took about 30 minutes because I didn't know what I was doing. To do it again would take 10.
