REI, Cabelas, classes any good??
I was wondering if the basic classes they offer are worth it for a beginner?
Thinking of looking into some basic navigation and or GPS classes as I need some starting point.
I have a couple books but I just am not a good book learner
I have been happy with the REI classes. I usually go to the avalanche ones. The instructors are helpful and will hang around after class to answer questions.
I just need some GPS and general navigation instruction. I will keep a eye on the classes and see if I can catch one.
Don't know about Cabela's. But, I've been an REI member for over thirty years, and have attended a number of "beginners" classes on things I was curious about. Some I got into others I didn't. They are exactly that. Beginners classes. And that's a good thing as they take you from step one. Usually by the end of a class, you have a pretty good understanding of the subject. That helps you take the next step, and all learning is one step at a time.
OP get into Geocaching. It is a great way to test out your gear and get some good practice in. There are several caches where they encourage the use of traditional navigational tools and to just use the GPSr as back-up.

That is a pretty good suggestion. I never really thought of it as a learning tool

Geocaching is also a great way to spend a day. Not all the caches are out in the boonies. Check out
