Desert Storm Vets: Did you get your medals?

I was over there with the 1-1 CAV, 1AD for Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Provide Comfort. I never received any of the actual medals we earned and would like to know if there is a way to contact the DA to have these issued to me.

The only thing D Storm award related on my DD214 is the Southwest Asia Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. I’m not even sure exactly how many medals we were awarded for that time frame. The 1-1 CAV was disbanded upon return to Germany after D Storm so they never issued us our medals. I was reassigned within my brigade so my new unit had no reason to issue me awards so I missed out, basically fell through the loops.

At the time it didn’t really matter to me, but now that I’m older and have kids it would be nice to have those awards to reflect back on. I’d like to have those medals issued and possibly have my DD214 updated to reflect this. Can it be done?

Awards to individuals no longer in the service, you can find out what you are entitled to and obtain any medals which you did not receive by contacting the following:

National Personnel Records Center
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5200

Yea, that’s one I didn’t get for sure. I thought there was one more, maybe I’m mistaken.

Do they update your DD214 as well when they issue awards that are not currently reflected on your 214?

They will send you a DD-215, which is an addendum to the DD-214.

Sounds like you got squared away. I didn't check that link but you can request a one-time (re-)issue of all your authorized medals.

You also have a "Kuwait Liberation Medal - Kuwait" coming.

So, to summarize, you are authorized...

National Defense Service Medal
Southwest Asia Service Medal w/3 Campaign Stars
Kuwait Liberation Medal - Saudi Arabia
Kuwait Liberation Medal - Kuwait

Thanks bigsapper! I hope they square me away.

I asked specifically by name for the “Kuwait Liberation Medal-Saudi Arabia” as mentioned above. I didn’t know about the “Kuwait Liberation Medal - Kuwait” listed above, but also requested that any other medals pertaining to D Storm be awarded if possible and asked for the re-issue of previous awards.

I hope they take the time to research what I qualified for and can get me those awards not specifically requested.

I expect they'll perform a thorough review. They did on my request, granting me three oak leaf clusters I wasn't aware I was due.

DS1 vets, don't feel too bad. They didn't issue us any of the actual service medals we were awarded for OIF, either. (ICM, GWOTSM, NDM, RFMw10, Overseas Service, etc)

Just some canned "American Soldier" crap that was probably given to them free by somewhere else.

Unless things have changed, when you do finally receive your reissue, any awards that have places on the back for engraving, will have your name engraved on it. Kind of a nice touch.

AFAIK, all Desert Shield/Storm vets are approved to wear the following medals:

National Defense Medal - Should already be on your DD-214
Southwest Asia Service Medal - Should already be on your DD-214
Liberation Of Kuwait Medal - Saudi Arabia
Liberation Of Kuwait Medal - Kuwait

The last two can be added to your DD-214 by calling USAHRC, St. Louis and ask for an update to your DD-214; you are authorized to wear them by merit of your time in service, which is denoted on your form.

I have a similar situation with the Iraq Campaign Medal, which was not official until I got back from Iraq; I am authorized to wear both the Global War On Terror Service Medal and Global War On Terror Expeditionary Medal; so when the medal was made official, I replaced the GWOTEM for the ICM, just read up on the award criteria requirements.

Southwest Asia Service Medal

Kuwait Liberation Medal - Saudi Arabia

Kuwait Liberation Medal - Kuwait

Hope that helps. Thanks for your service.

I am doing this too. Our unit recieved the Meritorious Unit Citation and its not on the DD214. Also if you were reserve unit called to action you are authorized the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device for Mobilization. Just another one to think about if you were reserve.

Be Safe

Oh yeah, I forgot about the AFRM; I have that one with an M Device (Mobilized), a bronze houglass device (10 years of service) and a Numeral 2 (Noble Eagle/OIF).

Wow, it appears I'm eligible for the GWOTM. I need to contact them.
