Has anyone called you out saying you arent a veteran or you are lying about your service?
funny story. had to share.
i was R.A had some medical issues (injury) and got an honorable discharge about 18 months early of my actual ETS... very proud of my service and wanted to be a lifer...
well a couple of "rangers special forces delta elite"

called me out on it saying "oh the army doesnt do that... you must have gotten introuble or something...

(wanna see the 3 scares in my belly? lol ) when i started talkin about where i was, what i did, and who i trained.... they were more or less quiet and just said "we cant talk about what we do" (i should have told them to just GTFO!)
and one of my friends who was friends with them more or less believed them more than me...
well my friend told me one day they found out that both of them have never even been in the military... and one of them skipped out on his wife and kids ( he was engaged to my friends friend)
yeah..
You know what you did, fuck them. Haters gonna hate

Nope.
And I don't spout crap that I can't back up either. Seems common with the super secret squirrel ranger seal types that "they have no paperwork, it's classified". Uh huh...right.
Ha, no. I'm the typical Marine. USMC tat on arm and bumper stickers galore. My favorite that gets the most responses "The most dangerous weapon in the world - A Marine and his Rifle"
Nope, but I look the part of what you'd think a soldier would look like so...
No one ever believes me when I tell cool war stories about guarding airfields, laying c-wire, filling sandbags, painting fences, laying field phone wire, filling water tanks, ground guiding vehicles, and standing in line for chow. You know all the cool shit.
It's funny, some people don't want to know about the war and will shy away from the subject. Others will dig and then I always talk about the Battle of the Piss Bottles or how I fought the Sandman in the Guardtower. Sure some stuff happened but it really isn't worth talking about, therefore I will never get accused of lying about my wartime service.
I generally don't talk about my service with non service folks. Unless you are a grunt or a pilot its just too damn complicated to explain and most people don't care anyway.
I have not had the opportunity to serve, but I have found that my .mil friends that have gone and done stuff usually don't talk about it much aside from their USAF/USMC/USN bumper stickers.
The posers on the other hand... Tend to be a bit more vocal.
I find that you can really pick out the real guys, especially the Marines. They have a neatness in their actions and how they wear their clothes that sets them apart. Even in the oilfield, I can usually pick the retired .mil guys apart. Some are a little too ordered for some of they oilfield mayhem, but they know how to give and take orders and follow up in harsh conditions... Which is part of the reason I try to make efforts to get our former military guys jobs in the oil patch, as they have great potential over a lot of the mirror foggers out there.
Thanks to you that have served.

I'm waiting for it to happen, but then again, I don't do the secret squirrel stuff. Nor do I make up a line of shit to espouse my greatness.
Nope
The Korean Lady that cuts my hair still swears I look like a Navy LTCMDR

Sounds like you're more butt hurt over your own inability to finish your initial contract.
Frankly, if you were in but failed to finish your initial term (don't know if that's your case but I'm guessing or it wouldn't bother you so much) due to any reason other than a training accident or wounded in combat then you aren't.
I see too many kids who come in and "get hurt" before their term is up and end up milking the VA for all its worth. If that's not you then good on you, if it is- then suck it up and stop mentioning you were in the military.
I get told I'm a piece of shit all the time for having a knee blowout, that count?
I was "issued" a dogtag during the Cold War by the Colonel (my dad). All the Cold War kids had them living over-seas "just in case".
I keep it on my key chain and have been offered .mil discounts when people see it. I always decline them.
Had it happen a few times. For some reason people refuse to believe I've been low speed high drag for the last 16 years.

"I know I can spot a faker a mile away.
Fuck all that "I'm a doctor" shit.
I'm an NCO, I can tell if there's something wrong with this guy. I've never gotten hurt, so obviously, there's no way anyone else could get hurt either. "
I tell 'em I was a cook. Absolutely nothing wrong with army cooks but no one ever doubts it, no one ever asks me to assist them with their culinary skills and no one ever asks any more questions.
I wasn't a cook.
I just tend to laugh as every "vet" you seem to meet tells you he was black ops sniper recon...for the small number of those elite you never seem to meet a proportionate number of mechanics, cooks, truck drivers etc...Just sayin.

Actually its more like, I'm an NCO and I can tell if a guy is shamming or not. People get hurt but kids who get hurt due to their own negligence but some how get it sloughed off on their time in are a waste to our system.
I'm merely placing shoes on the floor, if someone steps in them. Well...
I will go all out for a guy who is legitimately hurt. There is life after the military and they need to best prepared/helped for it.
Unfortunately there are quite a few (I'll even say a majority) of fakers and shammers out there. PTSD has it's share too.
Is there a reason you sound like a disgruntled specialist A-R-C?
To the OP's question, no.
I've never understood why people need to lie about being in the military or if they were in, exaggerate what they did. How hard is it to tell the truth?
I served two tours, one was a year long and the other six months. Joined as a 13F (FISTER) and got stuck behind a desk in the BDE TOC working behind an AFATDS doing a 13D's job. Second tour, I was a gunner in the Colonel's PSD.
NEVER been shot at. Had plenty of rocks thrown at us, fingers flipped our way (I flipped plenty back, LOL) and we didn't get hit by any IED's or RKG3's. My buddy's MRAP (in another platoon) got fucked up by a 155mm IED, but him and his crew made it out fine. Both tours I dodged plenty of rockets and mortars, with one or two being "Holy Shit" close.
I guess I don't get it.

I think most of the bullshitters are the guys that wash out of basic/ait. Remember that anyone who says all of their shit was squirrely will still have NCOERS/OERS/FITREPS that have Redacted/Classified in each block. Just saying.
ETA only quoting scout because I am his personally assigned troll.

Unless it's blacked out in magic marker like your last one......

I had a legitmate, non-combat related injury overseas.
I was told multiple times by numerous NCOs that I was a "shammer" "malingerer" and "quitter" even after providing MRI scans showing my fucking knee blown out.
I get real tired of guys who think that just because they've had soldiers before who were full of shit, that everyone who gets hurt, is full of shit.
I had an E5 with 10 years in, (in the infantry....) say to me "I've been in 10 years and never gotten hurt, how'd you get hurt in less than 3? Fucking faker...."

Unfortunately, that's the way of the Army. How often do you question people's PTSD claims or PHs? I've seen enough people scam the system that I instantly view someone with skepticism (unless it's something grievous). I know I'm not the only one. The fakers have ruined it for the real deal guys.
Reading your statements (in this and other threads), you seem to be holding a grudge against the entire NCO Corps. Every rank has it's shitbirds. You learn from them all and move on, even 10yr E5s. You're going to be a SGT, it's time to step up.
Part of it isn't really their fault. Generally, unless someone has been hurt before (especially with a similar injury) they really don't get it....even if they're understanding. I have 2 herniated discs (L4, L5) and a dicked up knee. I understand people get hurt and will do everything in my power to give them the resources to get better. Again, there is life after the Army and people need to be set up for success. But I've had my share of shammers and because of that, I watch everyone. Again, the way of the Army

QFT. The Army system, from promotions to disability has been G2ed and war-gamed to perfection in the last decade. As a leader you HAVE to look at everyone with skepticism but of course some people take it to far. I had two cracked knee caps and had a non deployable SFC who fell off a bike at 35 mph telling me I was full of shit from a hanging a single deployment (despite his deployments being Kosovo and kuwait) For that matter the army medical system put me on a physical therapy waiting list because "if it wasn't critical enough to send you home, you can go to the back of the list" I thought that was bad, then i went from the line to a support unit. Holy shit.
You can't generalize based on select experiences, especially if they're from a single unit. A lot of soldiers let their first unit shape their perception of the military when things can really change from place to place.
My recommendation is that you just don't tell people you got hurt. Simple solution. Tell folks you did your time and got out. The majority of "i only left because" folks seem to be the people so used to spitting out a prewritten line to VA to collect benefits that they have no other story to tell. You served America, you don't owe anyfuckingbody an explanation as to why you left early. Be proud of what you did, not upset about what you didn't.
Could be worse, you could end up in nursing.

No shit......Micro Biology sucks
ARC I suggest you stick with this line of thought when you're going to tell someone you got out of the Army. I met a guy one time who was proud of his "retired" ID card after only 3 years in and he drove it home that he milked it all from Uncle Sam.
If you got hurt, that sucks, but don't get pissy when someone who did a full contract (or more) calls you out on it. Be proud of what you did and not of what you didn't. If dude is a dick then then the conversation and call it a day. Letting little things bother you is a sure fire way to ensure you keep beating your head against a wall

I'm still AD and busting my balls trying to RTD or reclass (probably reclass)
At the Marine Corps Ball of all places, after we deployed to Iraq, we had a guy with a Vietnam hat come up to a group of us and start talking. For some reason he asked one of the guys in my platoon if he had ever killed anyone

My friend says "yeah" (I personally saw him kill several people, he was our lead gunner for a while) and the guy starts yelling that he's full of shit, because anyone who had actually killed someone would never admit to it
We all just stood there in our Dress Blues, looking at him. Very weird.
Last week there was an old timer in the store wearing a "Korean War Vetreran" hat. Another customer came in, about the same age and asked the guy where he was in Korea. This guy is a regular in my store a Marine, who was in Korea, Chosin Reservoir and all. The guy wearing the hat replied "I was in the Navy, stationed on Guam".
I didn't overhear the exchange, but the guy wearing the hat walked out...
Not sure what to think about it, but the Marine was pretty pissed.
