 Re-enlistment with past DUI s.

What is the likelihood that a prior service member (ARMY) who was discharged honorably and, who has also accumulated 2 DUI s in the past couple years, is able to re-enlist in the National Guard? Is it possible to re-enlist in the NG with a suspended license? I know that enlistments are up and all of the services are a lot more selective with who they let in. Is there a possibility that a NG recruiter would take on a case like this?

Thanks for the help.

Odds are no at this point. Starting next month on active duty, there is an automatic, non-waiverable bar to re-enlistment for Soldiers with DUIs.

Let me put it this way. There will be a surplus of soldiers who don't have DUI's needing jobs in the coming months.

BLUFF : Not going to happen.

The National Guards as a whole are over strength. The looming budget cuts and troop strength reductions coupled with the command climate directives toward OVI, DV, and significant misconduct are going to see a lot of marginal troops released. Prior service with suspended OL and OVI conviction x 2, I don't see the waiver authority acting favorably.

As already said, not going to happen.

Strangly, I have no problem with this.

Yeah, that was what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure.

Exactly how many Soldiers will be eliminated under this policy?

Which policy? Force-shaping? No re-enlistment post-DUI? Either way, many. And it's not just Army; it's across the board.

This will probably get rid of a lot of people I'd imagine

I have a friend who got into a bar fight or something along those lines a few months back. He ended up spending a few nights in jail and the AF bailed him out. I wonder if he may not be able to re-enlist? He said he was on some sort of probation so he couldn't change bases this year; I have no idea what that means.

In my last brigade it was an instant chapter to get a DUI.

Ought to be the Army wide rule.

Anyone have this in writing? I haven't seen anything yet but this will effect a couple people where I am currently, as well as a couple friends.

I'd like to be able to give my CO/XO/SGM a heads up as well as forward it to my buddies.

Thanks.

That's the way it is at Lewis now

No, there is nothing writing and there probably won't be.

It still will be as it's been; a DUI is a BAR offense for sure, but its still up to the command to impose it.

With the push for "quality", a DUI will get you a chapter in most units, skipping the BAR.

BAR's are highly misunderstood and underutilized.

Heard this from a senior career counselor last week here at Bragg. It's not published yet, doesn't go into effect until March.

My heavens, what has happened to the American fighting man/woman. Can't smoke, can't drink, hell, probably can't even give money for sex. I'm almost glad I'm getting old, these new military restrictions have taken all the fun out of going to war.

Heck, it's sorta reminding me of Barry Sadlers "Garet Trooper"

Sounds like you have a squared away Counselor..... most of the info is still pre-decisional, but is at 99% resolution;

There will be 5 additional incidents added to AR 601-280 that will be classified as "mandatory" BAR. A drug or alcohol related incident is one of the five.

There will be a message released within the next 30 days covering this, stay in contact with your local Career Counselor.

I have a copy of a Powerpoint slideshow that outlines the new, more stringent applications for a bar. Everything from DUI to excessive sickcall visits.

All the policies got released today; there's 3 memos- Army Directive 2013-03, the Tri-signed memo, and Phase II Retention mission. Your unit Career Counselors and Command should have them very soon.
