My Wife's Grandfather died a few years back, and she's looking to find out what medals he earned while in. He was in the US Navy for 3-4 years, maybe 50 years ago. I was thinking that if his DD-214 was anything like mine, it would have his medals and awards listed on it. She's trying to create a shadow box for him, for her Grandmother, and she wants it to be a surprise, so my wife can't just ask to see his DD-214, if her grandmother even knows where it is, or still has it. What should she do?
Thanks! He was discharged in 1945, so they're available to the public. Awesome. That means she doesn't need her Grandmother to request them.
