DoD Police (civilian GS employees) saluting officers
I'm a GS employee on Quantico. The base is slowly transitioning from using Marine MPs to DoD Civilian Police. When the DoD Civilian Police work the gate they salute the officers when they come through. Now I spent 10 years in the Army and understand the purpose of the salute although I don't really understand the purpose of having Civilian Police salute when other GS employees don't salute officers. This is not to demean officers in anyway I'm just curious if this is a "Marine Corps" thing or if the Civilian Police at other bases do the same.
Someone higher up probably complained that their ego was hurt by the lack of a salute when they changed over to civi guards so the order went out that the status quo would be maintained.

That was my first thought, I was curious if that happened service wide or just here on officer heavy MCB Quantico...
I see it on Pendleton and think it's stupid.
he USMC is all hung up on the gate guards and saluting.
I've seen them salute every blue sticker coming in the gate even if a teenage girl is driving.
Never been to a Marine post, but my perspective is that civilians are not allowed to salute (unless they are in the CoC i.e. POTUS). Saluting is a military custom not afforded to civilians. I have never seen it at an Army post, and I never hope to.
I don't see it at Fort Sam Houston.
PONDS guards over here flip you off...

My wif's an officer (USAF). Never seen a civillian guard salute her at any base gate.

I see it at Andrews AFB, MD
I've seen it at several Navy bases in Hampton Roads when I was stationed there.
I have never been saluted by "blue berries" (civilian gate guards). If I ever was by one I would tell them not to. I am an Army officer.
I am a retired USAF SNCO.
If you don't have on a uniform you don't salute. If you have not a ken the oath you don't salute. This is highly improper and should be stopped at all bases. I would raise a ruckus if they did that at my base. I am a GS employee now and retired from active duty so I am on both sides of the fence on this one. Raise a fuss.

I'll ask their program manager next week at the staff meeting.

Some of that comes from the fact that appearances may not indicate their rank. I know for fact Gen Salinas use to not get saluted because they thought she was a dependent. Not saluting a female general means the PMO/security force battalion gets many phone calls.
Local Air Force bases uniformed MP's salute my E-9 sticker in the window before I scraped it off. I was told it was out of respect for the rank, cool that and all but I work for a living. When the stickers became unneeded I pulled them off and now they salute my ID card.

I once got a salute at Randolph AFB from a DOD cop. It caught me off guard for sure.
Alot of Guards are former .mil...might just be habit...

This. And nothing against the civilian gate guards, but I do not feel half as safe with them up front. most of them look like a joke.
The based CGs decided to enact it is policy on Marine bases. Bottom line it was ego driven.
Thanks for the update, I appreciate your asking.

BWAHAHAH.....
Army Regulation 190-56 does not address the issue at all. If there is a requirement it is probably an installation requirement.

Or means she'll park her car right there in the lane, blocking traffic, and sit there and wait until the Provost Marshal personally shows up to kiss her ass and make everything better...

Its all over the Navy based in Hampton Roads as well as the Coast Guard base. I feel stupid whether I return it or not. No good answer on that.
I've had a few civilian gate guards salute me. They were prior service so I take no offense whatsoever. Infact, I like knowing that they served and that they still have the same pride in their current job.

If you get a salute, always return it.
I'm a DoD Civilian, although not a PO. However if I were, I would render a salute to an officer. Respect the rank. No harm, no foul.
contracted security on Navy bases in the Norfolk area are mixed on this. doesn't bother me not to get saluted by a civilian guard. i usually prefer that than returning the fucked up salutes they give.
The gate guards follow regional guidance. I too am a GS in Hampton Roads and I'm a retired officer, so I get saluted at every base here, USN, CG, and AF, both by the civilian police and by the military guards. I have no problem with this, it is appropriate.

All the civilian security at NOB, Oceana, and JEBLC-FS are GS, not contractor.

I'm at NNSY - we have Marine security forces, Navy MAs, Navy Police (which I'm assuming are GS), and contracted guards. It's a cluster

You have Marine Security Forces? Unless it is in support of refuel-defuel they shouldn't be doing security.

Correct. Aren't based here permanently.
