ER Dr. didn't accept Tricare, now I pay out of pocket?!?!
My wife went to a private hospital that accepts Tricare Reserve Select for an ER emergency for facial stitches after getting bitten by a dog. (Our blind, elderly dog snapped at her while she was giving his shots). The ER doc called in their Oral/Maxillofacial surgeon to do the stitches because he was concerned about a facial scar. Well I get a statement in the mail where the Dr billed United Concordia under our dental plan even though it was facial stitches, and had nothing to do with her mouth. I wrote the doctor a letter and said they billed it to our dental insurance by mistake and to please bill Tricare. They said although the hospital takes Tricare, the Doctor on call does not and I would have to make payments for what our dental insurance didn't cover. Plus that used up all our dental coverage for the year!
It doesn't make me any happier knowing the guy was a Air National Guard pilot back in the day and knows I am deploying soon but still will not work with me on taking Tricare for an ER visit at a covered hospital!
Is there anything I can do? I can't afford this right now and my wife can't handle the stress of one more thing to worry about.
Write letter to:
Dental insurance about fraud committed because you didn't authorize dental visit from this doctor who isn't even a dentist.
Cdr about hopital Doctor. Needs a couple letters to have have business blackballed.
Local paper needs sob story from wife about the trauma and rage it is causing her husband to deal with this prior to deployment.
Insurance shouldn't be authorizing payment without your OK.
We'll also need the doctor's Full name, addr., Email addr. phone number of hospital, Dr's home and work phone number and extensions and pics to make any further judgement and express our displeasure after we get the other side of the story. Wish I had unlimited minutes.

Plus I'd refuse to pay a damn thing until they straightened out that fraud with the Dental Ins. issue. Particularly since once you deploy it falls under soldier sailor act unless your wife works they have to come after you.
Contact hospital billing and explain that their facility is a Tricare hospital and you should have been notified that the Dr who did the sewing is the hospitals problem. He does not accept Tricare as payment but the hospital authorizes it as payment. Seems like their mistake for having a Dr on call not authorized to accept Tricare.

I agree with your post 100%. However, Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons are considered dentists in the eyes of medical practice. While they may hold dual degrees (DDS and MD), they are considered dentists and are on the hospital staff as such.
On another note, I am a National Guard dentist. If I can be of any help, drop me a PM.

Burn his house down, shoot his dog, sell his children into slavery.
Doctors are free to choose which insurance companies they want to deal with. Some aren't worth the hassle.
The facility I work at has signs all over the place stating that the treating physicians are not employees of the hospital and you will receive a separate bill from them.
That being said I agree with Casper's suggestion about going the fraud route.
I pay about $400.00 a month in out of pocket prescriptions costs that tri-care doesnt cover...awesome insurance...
