1. How long have you been on straight third shift?

2. Do you think working 30 years of third shift will take 20 years off your life?

3. Do you know anyone who worked a full career of third shift and lived to see 70?

1. 16 yrs

2. Its probably added years from not having to deal with too much brass.

3. Don't know anyone that's done 30 yrs of dogwatch....but I'm gonna try. I'll come back in 27 years when I hit 70 and repost if I can find this thread in the archives.

3. Do you know anyone who worked a full career of third shift and lived to see 70? My buddies dad did 25 years on mids and he is early 60's now so close, lol

The only time I worked day shift as a regular shift was when the kids were younger and the wife asked that I be home at night to help out.

Its busier at night. No brass.

I work days at my part time agency a few times a month, but I'm generally the only one there

I've known several guys full careers on third shift. I don't know if any made it to 70 (some aren't there yet) but I know a lot of them look older than they are.

1600-0200 for a year. It isn't mids but quite often I stay till 0500. Many other overnights in the preceding five years though.

I agree with the lack of brass around helps, it makes some relationships struggle some if you don't have good home support.

I Love them, plan on another 25 years grinding it out in the dark, I don't like when the day moon is out for working on an ambulance.

I"ve been working either 2200-0800,or 2100-0700 hrs since 1990 or 1991. I came on in 1986 when we worked all 3 shifts. Now the shifts are 0700-1500 and 1500-2300, or 2100-0700. We overlap 2100-2300 hrs. I work 4 10 hour days, and I am off 4 days. I love it. I don't always get alot of sleep while working. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I worked 2200-0600 for the first 9 years.....I loved the work, but trying to have a normal life around it was hard. I never got enough sleep. A couple hours sleep before Church on Sunday morning, court on Monday & Wednesday, SWAT on Tuesdays....never knew if I was coming or going.

1.) I have worked lates for 12 years. It is a different world after the sun goes down. The type of calls and the type of people that you deal with are usually quite different than the type of calls the day shifters get.

2.) It may just be the death of me, so probably.

3.) No, not that worked lates all of the way through. Most transfer to a day shift once they have the seniority to do so or decide that they no longer desire to fight what lurks at night, ergo....they feelin' too old for this shit.

I did night 12's for 2 1/2 years as a dispatcher. Now as a LEO, I'm on rotating swings, going monthly from 0700-1500 to 2300-0700. The rotating shifts SUCK balls, as you get about 3 weeks to get used to the new hours, and 1 week to enjoy it before switching all over again. On the days we go from 0700-1500 to 2300-0700 is called doubleback day, which comes 6 times a year (every other month). We work the day tour, sleep in the afternoon, and have to be back for the night tour. Usually the way the days fall, most of us only do 3 of these, some take them off, some are on regular days off, etc.

ETA: I have been bucking for a permanent night shift for a long time. If my Capt would let me do a trade with an officer of the opposite shift, I will stay on nights and switch Sgts monthly.

I've been doing mids since 91, 2100-0700 most of the time. 4 on 4 off. Staying out of the sun has allowed to keep my boyish good looks.

At least I'll leave a nice corpse to burn.

Worked it for 17years, enjoyed it, it is a different world. Did enjoy it. However when I got older it became harder to do.

Second the day starts at midnight, so its not third shift, that's some BS that those low life day people put out so they can say they are on 1st shift while getting cats out of trees, washing the Chief's car etc. We called it A line, then B line and C line.

Been on 2300 - 0700 since '98.
Went to 10 hour days at the end of October now we are working 2100-0700, with an extra 50+ off days a year.
Never wanted to work anything else. No brass, no traffic, fewer normal people.

If you work nights like everyone else works days I don't believe it would effect life span.
When you try to spend all day doing normal people stuff and then catching a few winks at work between runs, you won't be seeing to much of your retirement.

One friend has spent 30 years on nights and retired at 50. Still around after 8 years and doing fine.

Let's see, coming up on 20 years this August.

Has it taken time off my life? Difficult to say. I've got bone loss issues which may be in part due to the day light sleeping but there are a whole bunch of issues that cause the stress in my life and working nights is just one of them. Further, you know what they say about things that take 10 or so years off your life. If those ten years are the diaper ones, well thank god!

As to the third question, no, not really, about knowing others on 3rd shift.

I've been doing them for 18.5 years now.

What was the question?

Like said, no bosses so that stress is reduced so that's nice.

Health? Who knows. I have high blood pressure and diabetes. But so does my sister, dad did as well as his brother and sister and none of them ever worked thirds. So I doubt that's what caused it.

I've only been doing it 9 years but a co-worker has been doing them for over 20 years.
