I didnt get a single pic in the LE forum so lets see if it works better here!

It has been awhile since we have done this thread. I have been making these for a little over a year and I think it is much more effective than the collapsible metal batons. Here are the extras that I have made...lets see what you guys have!

Inside my messy car:

Dog not included!

I certainly like the look of the old school wood batons.

We have these:

The RCB is a bad mofo.

Dymond wood, or however funky way they spell it, are authorized for our dept. Beats the general issue balsa wood toothpicks they issue if you go to the property room.

No lanyard for cool twirling stuff though.

I know what you're talking about! I have seen this one Long Beach PD guys diamondwood straight stick, and man, that would drop a 99%r like a sack of hot potatoes! I never got around to buying one, I'd much rather a stout straight stick over my asp.

I have a dymondwood stick that I made and actually like cocobolo better. The dymondwood is denser but it doesnt have the weight or durability of cocobolo. I dropped my dymondwood stick and it took a huge chunk out of the tip, the wood sticks just bounce!

ASP are a joke. Get the old Winchester or the new Peacekeeper.

It's a difference similar in comparison to balsa wood versus Dymond wood/CocoBolo.

That first video was filmed in my old command when I was NYPD the old St. Pats post. I was a pr24 guy when I was there but out here in east cupcake we carry the asp. We still have a few cocobolo guys left though.

Have some pics of dads from back in his service days. It has a big chuck missing about 2/3 of the way up from what he will only tell me was someones "total and utter failure to communicate with authority"

I still have my 30 inch wood baton in my locker, think it is made out of Oak amd swings like a baseball bat. Unfortunately mine is in no where the kind of shape those posted above are.

Had a shorter one that "got taken away" when the chief got complaints from the ghetto dwellers that I would spin it on it lanyard when we were on disturbance calls in Public Housing, lol.

Those are some cool pictures...those wood batons look like they have really been taken care of!

Unlike our ASPs which seem to be beat to hell and not always taken care of by the troops.

They are brand new, I make them myself. Almost finished with a few more, ill post pictures once they are polished.

They are 18 to 21ish inches long. Depending on the wood and how I felt at the time of making them. I had the weekend off and busted out 5 or 6 with a newer handle design (I think it looks much better). Now I just need to polish them and put on straps. Ill post pics tomorrow.

Here are the ones that I have started making this weekend. They need to be polished and have lanyards put on them. One is going to tuccioc1 and another I think to KyleCanuck.

From the good old days when each cop would make his own baton.

I bought this one a couple years ago. Ironwood, quite heavy.

Size difference.

Wow, I dont know if they would let us carry the second one. It looks like the tire thumpers that truckers carry!

No doubt. You would destroy anything you hit with it. A two handed swing would be vicious. Ironwood is so dense that it will sink in water, and so hard that they make bearings out of it.

In the middle of a bad case of temporary burnout a few years back, I left my issued polymer straight stick in my locker and showed up at readoff with a wooden t-ball bat in my flashlight ring.

That also happened to be the night the (now former) city manager showed up for some bullshit ceremony, probably to reward a certain officer who managed to tie his shoes correctly on two consecutive shifts. Our Lt put us in inspection formation against the wall while the CM tried to channel Patton during the walk-by, but really resembled Barney the Dinosaur looking for a place to poop. He got to me, looked me over, and saw the bat.

"Officer, what....is...that?"
"We're testing new nightsticks, sir. This is a prototype."
"Why does it say Louisville?"
"Camouflage, sir. Don't want to spook people."
"Ummm, OK."

He moved on, but I very quickly got threatened with suspension if I left the building like that.

I carried an issued black nightstick in the Air Force. Made of pine, IIRC, and broke at 21 pounds of pressure (What they told us). Also swung a riot baton at RAF Greenham-Common in 1983 with CNDers and Peace Women.

There is. I saw a video on youtube about it. Looks pretty legit for a telescoping baton.

This thread is getting me all excited. The two times I've used my ASP, it's worked reasonably well. But each time I've visited local academy classes during DTAC, I get a little jealous.

Now what a year it's been. I work near Oakland, CA, and I think we've sent SRT teams twice to assist in the past six months. Admin started scrambling for riot batons and shields. This month we swore in a new Chief, and she's a big fan of straight sticks. Her first order of business (or nearly so) was to authorize straight batons and training.

Using the handcuffs as a scale I would guess 13-16ish inches? I might try and make one of those tonight.

This is the BOTS forum. They are old school alternatives to the ASP baton or other impact weapons that police officers carry.

Cocobola wood. Very dense and very hard hitting. I've used it a few times with good effect.
Just a note for the inexperienced. You don't hold it where you'd expect. I hold mine at the bottom with the leather strap around my right index finger. The 'head' is the impact part of the espantoon.
