Looks like they are making a movie about the massacre of the
Ninth Legion called
Centurion. It might be good.
Plot:
"The British-set sword and sandals thriller, set during the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 117, details the story of Quintus Dias, sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, who marches north with General Virilus' legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth and destroy their leader Gorlacon."
Centurion was written originally by director Neil Marshall under the working title Ninth Legion. Historically, the Ninth Legion marched into Scotland from Hadrian's Wall with over 4,000 men and disappeared. Historians dispute the fate of the legion; some believe they were disbanded, while others believe they were massacred in Germania years later. Marshall said of his take of the legend:
"It's not meant to be historically perfect. I'm picking up on a legend and exploring it... it's an action thriller."
I saw a show about this on the History channel a while back and it was good. The Ninth Legion got wiped out. Then the Fourteenth Twin Legion led by General Gaius Suetonius Paulinus defeated
a much bigger Iceni army lead by Boudica at the
Battle of Watling Street. They don't have a trailer yet but
here is a behind the scenes story about the movie. Looks pretty good.
It got Olga Kurylenko in it so I'm in.
Wow, she cleans up pretty good.

I am keeping my eye on this one. Unfortunately, having read Kard Edward Wagner's Legion From The Shadows, I have a pre-conceived notion of what happened to the 9th.
That novel would make a great movie, except most of the action took place in the dark.
If handled seriously, this could be a good movie.
I hope it's good. I enjoyed 'Gladiator' & '300' as much as the next guy- but if you pick the right story it has enough action & drama without the Hollywood treatment adding lots of nonsense*.
When I first saw your subject I thought it was going to be about the Teutonberg Forest Massacre
link. I'm slightly ashamed to say I was not familiar with this (Ninth Legion in Britain) episode.
ETA- *that's not to say there isn't room for hot barbarian chicks in any movie, though.

You had me confused for a minute, until I realized we were talking about two separate historical incidents. My bad.
Ya know, the movie promoters really should have said the Roman invasion of (now) Scotland in AD 117, as the Roman province of Britain had been pacified for quite some time at that point. Ah, Hollywood.

Sounds like a good flick.
