Some sort of fuse, perhaps? More pictures would be of great benefit to us.

Definitely fuses.
Loads of "AMCO" turn up with a google. More background info from OP would help.

All I know is that They are my friends and they were passed down to him from his grandfather which was in normandy during World War 2

Don't spin the top with the 2 dowel looking things sticking out. They will allow the fuse to set for detonation.
