I live in Florida, and have been looking at purchasing a silencer. In most states including here, a buyer must pay a $200 tax to buy a silencer. It is also $200 for a class 1 or class 2 FFL. My question is: If I had an FFL, could i bypass paying the $200 tax stamp to buy a silencer for personal use? The reason for this would be that my 200 dollars would also go towards, being able to bypass shipping through an FFL if i wanted to buy another gun online.
Also, you can't get an FFL just to enhance your collection or avoid paying taxes. You need to be "in the business".

And pay that every year until you no longer want the ability to deal in NFA.

You're not going to get an FFL for personal use.

Its not as hard as everyone thinks (i.e. business is loosely defined). Say for example you live in a city where lots of movies are filmed. Maybe you start a business where you supply firearms and instructions to the set. Get a variance from the city to run the business from home, as it will not create more residential traffic. ATF will approve the FFL. Ask me how I know. Just don't ask how to get a movie company to hire such a business, the website draws no traffic and no one picks up the fliers at the range. The SOT has a few more issues. (not intended for legal advice)

It's possible, if you legally construct a legitimate business at your home address and don't appear suspicious as to your motives. I wouldn't do that without forming a corporation, which requires its own set of fees, accounting and basic legal services on both the state and federal level, and I wouldn't be very happy about opening my private residence up to the required inspections. In any event, it's not going to be a cool project for a Saturday afternoon.
