I just got PCS orders to CA with follow on to Hawaii... what does this mean for my AR lower that I just built? or an upper that I would like to attach to it? Also, I am completely unaware of hawaii's gun laws... is there a centralized resource I can use to find this stuff out?

Not asking many questions, am I?

Not sure about HI but in CA, you must have a bullet button on your AR if you have any evil feature, I.e. Pistol grip, fore grip ect..... Mags are capped at 10 rounds for all guns. Your upper should be fine as long as it 16" or more.

on any weapon brought in? even if it is already assembled and mated to an upper before entering the state?

This will take some research. Many times there is exception for Military. I had a number of double edge knives in CA and a civilian couldn't even have a bowie with a sharpened back edge on the clip point.

This is what I'm hoping for 末 I don't want to modify my lower, buy a POS CA-legal upper that isn't set up the way I want, then have to undo everything in a year when I move out of CA again.

ETA: Anyone here been through this before –– i.e., moving into CA with their AR?

There's no such thing as a CA legal (or illegal) upper - just the federal length requirements. Some lowers are banned by name. However there is an exception for active duty mil.

Fucking hide it the CHP is not going to randomly knock on your door. Don't go shooting as much as it will suck. Then pull it out till you go to hawaii. But HI has some pretty weird laws to so be sure to research it.

Good info 末 tks. 末 however, letter from the base commander saying that "the use of personal assault weapons [is necessary] for sanctioned military actions" ??

I just want my rifle to be my rifle, and not be forced to make it some CA-approved AR-15-shaped baseball bat.

I'll have to call the CA DOJ up, probably.

er... considering that I'm AD military, being caught would involve civvy punishment and military punishment... not willing to give up a stripe or two over this. Hell, I'll leave it with some family in NC if I have to.

I don't know how it works going down the mil route, but all of these were perfectly legal in CA.

Stocks were not pinned (I just really like A2 stocks ).

The magazine catch/releases were replaced with raddlock bullet buttons and had to be used with 10 round magazines.

Get a bullet button and disassemble your > 10 rd magazines and you're good to go so long as the lower receiver is not one of the following:

American Spirit USA
Armalite AR-10, M15, Golden Eagle
Bushmaster XM15
Colt 6920, Match Target, Sporter
Dalphon BFD
DPMS Panther
Eagle Arms EA-15 A2 H-BAR, EA-15 E1, M15
Frankford Arsenal
Hessee Arms HAR 15A2
Knighs RAS, SR-15, SR-25
Les Baer Ultimate
Olympiuc AR-15, Car-97, PCR
Ordnance Inc AR-15
Palmetto SGA
Professional Ordnance Carbon 15
PWA
Rock River Car A2, A4, LE Tactical Carbine, NM A2, Standard A-2, Standard A-4 Flattop
Wilson Combat AR-15

That's the list of banned lowers. Anything other than those is good to go.

Hell, PM me your address and I'll send you a bullet button and a 10 round magazine. I just escaped CA (moved to VA yesterday) so I have plenty of compliance parts sitting around.

Bummer about the receiver. Buy a new one (I think Palmetto is still having their $50 sale) and swap out the parts, leave your DPMS with a friend or sell it or something and you should be good to go.

How soon are you moving to CA? I can get a BB in the mail tomorrow but it will be a week or so before I can get to my 10 round mags.

no worries –– departing in a little more than a month, and I'll probably be down in VA soon to visit a friend there –– I'm also swinging through on my way out to visit family (I'm taking their grandkids all the way across the country from them), so we can meet up somewhere, if it comes down to it and it's convenient for you.

http://www.calguns.net is a great place for info on CA laws. They have a few flow charts you can follow to find out if your guns are CA legal. Takes some of the guess work out of it. If your lowers are old enough they may be pre-ban and worth something to people in certain states. CA isn't one of them though. Ca isn't really as bad as people make it out to be on here. I mean it sucks compared to alot of states but on here its exaggerated about 20X worse than it really is. We can get just about any gun here other than .50BMG and with .338 being better in almost every way and .50 DTC being legal here if you really are compensating its pretty much good to go.

Fixed mag thing sucks but its not that bad. We are working very activly on getting our rights back and have lots of cases in court right now. Some cities are even giving out CCW's which was unheard of a while back.

Mav, I'm also active duty and have looked into similar things. Contact California DOJ and inform them that you will be entering the state en route to Hawaii and they will give you all the Info you need, and will likely be able to get you in contact with someone in Hawaii that can give you the info for out there. California requires the Active Duty Military keep guns in accordance with Federal Regulation and to notify them prior to entering the state.
