The only things that will survive after a massive nuclear attack will be roaches and sauerkraut.

(I love sauerkraut----mmmmmm good.)

Eat it and if you get sick then you will know whether or not it is unspoiled.

It is intended for a very long refrigerator life, comparable to salad dressings. I assume you closed the jar really tightly the last time you used it.

I would suggest eight weeks maximum, though (around two months).

I've used saurkraut batches for three months without spoilage.

If you want it even longer, just store it in a weak brine and it will keep for a looooooong time.

If it doesn't start good, can we say it ever stays good?

Two alleged foods that are not allowed in my house: sauerkraut and liver.
If my family wants either, they can cook it at grandma's and eat it there.

Sauerkraut is not good to begin with, although it is rather tasty.

I asked the same a year or so ago about dill pickles. Ended up eating the jar in question, and look at me...Just fine...

it's already rotted cabbage, so you should probably throw it out. Do it for the children.

He means the picled cabbage, not the weinies! Hell,I've used saurkraut that was a few YEARS old and no harm done! The lid was closed tightly and I mainly did it because I was too lazy to go back to the store after just leaving it to buy brats and beer. Figured: "what the hell,if I get sick I'll just miss 1 day of work!"

Fresh sauerkraut = shit yourself
"Bad" sauerkraut = shit yourself

That said, there is nothing better than a stadium dog with some kraut and mustard.

I believe that the terms "stay" and "good" are mutually exclusive.

Forever. When my grandmother was a child at the turn of the last century most of their winter-time food was sauerkraut (her dad would buy a barrel of it). Canned food wasn't readily available back then and no refrigeration either.

Bump for more kraut goodness.

ETA: And to find out if FatMcNasty is still alive after the zombie chow kraut.
