UK Modified AR15 side charging handle.

Hey ...I expect to get some shit about UK laws and freedom etc during this thread....sadly it goes with the territory.

Here in the UK we can only have "straight pull" configuration AR's.
Basicaly single shot...we have to cycle the action to reload every time.

I've been experimenting with a side charging handle as opposed to the rear charging handle. Check out the link to see what I mean exactly. There are modifications done to UK AR's to allow them to be cycled from either the left or right of the rifle but these require extensive machining of the upper to accomodate the handle. And on modified AR's to be cycled from the right it requires that the case deflector and forward assist are removed....

My little modification only requires the original charging handle to be replaced with my modified handle which allows the shooter to cycle the action without any major gunsmithing work at all.

I just wanted to share this with you guys and welcomed any feedback. (not relating to our shitty laws)

Cheers

i am guessing this locks in place and will not cycle with the bolt like the original handle? if it doesn't put my eye out while shooting in semi i really might like one of those.

2 things i can think of off the top of my head.

move to left side so right hand can stay on grip close to trigger

shorter "handle" to keep from snagging on gear or poking me in the side.

Looks like the version hes makeing is only single shot use. You wouldhave to redesign it to have the same length and shap as the original CH and to free float over the carrier, as well as lock into the upper for use on a semi auto -- That is unless you want your teeth knocked out. LOL

The way its made would knock the piss outa anyone trying to use it on a semi.

i'm to purty to have my noggin smashed by the CH.

No gas tube, no moving bolt. On a regular old USA type AR you just might get a mouthfull of charging handle.

slayer I do have plans for a left sided cycling handle ...the main reason for that was for the left hookers (left handed) but many may find that easier, as you say it means you can keep your right hand welded to the grip.

Thanks for all your input

Viper you are right this is no good for a semi-auto....but there is no reason why I cannot modify this handle to fit your semi-auto AR's. I'd just extent the centre piece to engage as the standard handle does. I'd not considered you guys over there would have been interested in a side cocking handle but if makes life easier for you then who knows. I'll take orders shortly...

ah, the spirit of ingenuity! some ARFCOM guy made a wooden device for bump firing a while back. I don't how much further he got on it.
Nice going though.

...oh by the way, your gun laws suck!!

I saw that device and the video of it in use...it looked pretty cool.

What gun laws

Don't have a single shot AR and don't want to convert my semis.

Very limited prospects.....anywhere but UK anyway.

Is it legal to have the buffer and spring in? or do you have to pushe the bolt forward also ?
just curious as it looks like it would be pretty fast if the bolt closes for itself

Tommy this is purely designed for the UK market. I'm not here to try and convert you. I just wanted to share and get some feedback. This handle could easily be manufactured to fit a semi-auto AR without pushing your eyeball through the back of your head...

There would be no conversion needed for your semi to single shot.....the only difference would be access from the side as opposed to the rear. Once i have perfected the UK possibilty i'll knock up a few that would be semi-auto compatible and send them over to you guys to try if you'd like.

regards

I could see some people wanting something like that here if they lived in a state that doesn't allow the use of a semi-auto for hunting. just modify the gas tube to vent away from you and you have a straight pull bolt action rifle. Then when you want to shoot semi again, put in a normal gas tube.

Taffy:

It might have a market over here, if.....

OK say some resident of California wants to shoot NRA highpower but doesn't have a grandfathered AR. Said person could simply disable the gas system and use your mod and shoot it as a match rifle.

Out-of-state match? Simply replace gas tube and carrier and shoot like the rest of the nation.

Neccessity is the mother of invention.

Nice work!

That's a pretty cool part you have there. I'd love to see one for a semi version. I'd keep the charging handle on the right, as that is where it is on my M1A, so it would make it a common practice for charging and clearing.

any chance of making the knob switchable to either side? or perhaps both sides?

I intend to make both left and right handed handles so I see it sensible to do the same when it comes to making US compatible handles. It wont be interchangable....you'd need 2 handles...one for left and one for right handed cocking.

Is it true that UK AR's are muzzle loading?

Pretty neat idea.

I take it that you have the gas tube removed to make it single shot? Otherwise that bad boy would hit you on the nose!

Scott Medesha has been building side cocker AR uppers and bolt carriers for a while.

But at $1,359 for that one (complete kit). I think my handle may be more realisticaly available.

And there is no machining required of the upper.
