Washington Deputies Face Discipline for Prank Car Chase
ASSOCIATED PRESS

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- A red-faced sheriff has apologized to city police, who joined deputies in a phony car chase that a sheriff's spokesman called ''horseplay that has gone seriously awry.''

The Oct. 3 chase ended when police used a spike strip to disable the fleeing car and drew their weapons on the driver, who turned out to be an undercover deputy being chased by another deputy on the way to the Public Safety Building to end their shifts.

The incident involving three deputies is being investigated and will be turned over to the Office of Professional Standards, which will report to Spokane County Sheriff Mark Sterk, spokesman Cpl. Dave Reagan said.

''The sheriff was very embarrassed to have to go to the chief of another agency and apologize,'' Reagan said. ''Nobody has a very good explanation of what occurred other than it appears to be horseplay that has gone seriously awry.''

The deputies involved in the unnecessary chase through city streets may have violated state law and department policy, Reagan said.

The deputies, who were hired in 2002, remain at work, said Reagan, who said he cannot release their names until an investigation is complete.

The chase started early on Oct. 3 when a deputy in a marked patrol car turned on its lights and chased two deputies in an unmarked Mustang, apparently as a gag, Reagan said.

The three had just completed a traffic stop east of downtown Spokane and were headed to the Public Safety Building near downtown to end their shifts.

When the deputy in the marked car turned on its lights, deputies in the unmarked Mustang accelerated, Reagan said.

After the cars entered the city, a city police officer saw the chase and joined in, thinking the deputy in the marked patrol car was trying to make a legitimate stop.

Officers heard radio calls about the chase and laid a spike strip across a street about three blocks from the Public Safety Building, flattening one of the Mustang's tires.

The undercover deputy who was driving got out of the car as police officers pointed guns at him, telling him to get on the ground, Reagan said.

Another Spokane police officer arriving at the scene quickly got out of his car to assist, but apparently failed to set his parking brake, Reagan said. That vehicle rolled through a cable fence and struck a pole, causing about $2,000 damage. The only damage to the unmarked Mustang was a flat tire.

State law says policing agencies must have reasonable and necessary reasons to break traffic laws, Reagan said.

''If it's not reasonable and it's not necessary, we're held to the same standards the general public is held to,'' Reagan said. ''I want to assure the public that this is not business as usual.''

Police appear to have reacted correctly to the deputies' chase, Deputy Police Chief Al Odenthal and Reagan said.

Spokane police aren't angry at the deputies, acting spokesman Lt. Dean Sprague said.

''They're the ones who have to answer for it,'' Sprague said. ''They were goofing around. You just kind of go, 'Come on, guys.'''

They do it in east sno-county all the time, but it is done on the back roads where no one cares and no one calls 911.

Classic, the only problem here is they got caught

That's funny as hell. I'd give them a pass, myself.

I want to get a picture of a few of my buddies and myself, all in uniform crammed into a marked unit and toasting with empty beer bottles for a Christmas card. But only if we wouldn't get fired for it....

Reminds me of when a buddy of mine was following me in an unmarked and lit us up behind a huge shopping center. My partner and I stuck our hands out the windows the way the bangers do now in LA. Cracks me up sometimes.

I don't know. If it didn't endanger anybody, what's the harm?

In podunk county, sure, what's the harm. I'd let it pass there too.
What kinda speeds were they doing on city streets? And if you read the whole thing, over $2k damage done, so taxpayers gotta ante up for it.

Maybe I am dumb but why is that so funny, people die, lives get ruined in high speed chases, suppose that car crashed into a school bus full of kids. Podunk or city, this would never fly if it were civilians chasing each other around at high speeds. Cars would get impounded, fines thrown at them, and suspended licenses would be the end result, not just a "oh you silly popo having a good ol time wadn't chua?!"

riiiiiight. Held to the same standards, but you are not releasing thier names. They did not go to jail for thier crime, and I bet they did not even issue a speeding ticket. They are still drawing a salary and did not even miss a day of work or have to come up with bail money, no trip in front of a judge? Nothing...

The police are not angry at them, and think you should just laugh it off.

Same standards, gotcha

I can bet you that if Joe Citizen was in that Mustang he would have gotten his skull caved in upon capture and then be brought up on charges of evading police, assault on a police officer, and speeding.

Deputies Susspended For Mock Car Chase
ROB KAUDER
KREM.com

SPOKANE - Three deputies involved in a late-night prank car chase that ended with Spokane police officers forcing an end to the run thinking it was a real chase have been suspended from duty.

Sheriff Mark Sterk placed the three deputies on administrative suspension Friday morning after completing most of a review into what happened the night of October 3rd.

"We have completed much of our administrative review of the incident, and it appears sheriff's office policy was violated," Sheriff Sterk said Friday. "Based on that, I have suspended the three deputies pending a review of the incident for criminal charges."

Following a traffic stop that evening the deputies -- one driving a marked patrol car and two plainclothes officers driving an unmarked Ford Mustang - decided to hit their lights and hold a mock pursuit.

A Spokane police officer saw the cars, thought it was a legitimate chase and radioed for assistance. Two officers responded near Anthony's restaurant on North Post, laying down a spike strip while a third officer got out of his car and accidentally left it in gear as he rushed to the scene. The car rolled into a pole and sustained an estimated $2,200 in damage.

The spike strip stopped the unmarked Mustang, causing $400 in damage to its tires and to the spike strip.

Following the incident the Spokane County Sheriff's Office had to apologize to Spokane Police Chief Roger Bragdon
