I Reported an Asphalt "Coating" Scammer

I was out rebuilding a truck and see a quad cab pickup drive to the end of the street. The driver gets out and yells at the caretaker (a group home for retarded), "Are you the owner, would you like your ashpalt coated?"

This caretaker is an African, as in born in Africa, probably here on some sort of green card. He doesn't understand or probably comprehend what is being asked about and indicates such. The driver aggressively again asks if he wants the asphalt in the driveway coated. The caretaker responds no, I am not the owner here.

This driver looks like a guido, something Arfcom has shown me. There's a 20-ish in the passenger seat, looks Mexican but maybe guido too. I notice the truck has CA plates (I'm in WA). My curiousity is piqued so I come out from behind the truck.

I say, "show me a sample of the coating." The driver tells his assistant to "stir it up real good and put some in a bottle." He makes a production of stirring and dips in with something then pours it into a plastic pop bottle. It looks identical to used motor oil with maybe some sand in it.

I tell him no thanks, memorize the license, the car make and color and some other info.

Yeah, I called the police and reported it. Might save some old lady from getting ripped off by an aggressive scammer.

My CSB.

In fairness, used motor oil would coat your asphalt.

Oh, it'd coat it alright. The sand mixed in is a nice touch. Like retarded people don't have enough to deal with.

Good for you.

I had the meat truck guys show up last night for the first time in my life. Full sleeve tats, stinking of smoke. As soon as I told them I wasn't interested they weren't nearly as friendly. They especially seemed put off that I wouldn't allow total strangers with boxes of ??? in to my home where my wife was. Strange.

Yeah I had some of those guys show up at my house. Told them to get lost. They ran over my neighbor's mailbox on the way out of my driveway. I didn't notice till the next day. Of course they didn't bother to mention it.

I hate scammers. Once I was at 7-11 and two dick heads pulled up in a van right beside my truck. As I was walking over they told me a story about a club ordering too many speakers.. blah blah blah. They flashed a big wad of cash in my face saying they just sold the 2nd last one. I would have snatched it out of his hands but had my hands full.

I sold meat from a truck when I was a kid. The best part of the job was beating on the little truck.

Um, asphalt seal coating is not a scam. The product is a petroleum based liquid with sand in it. A well managed propert will have their parking lots seal coated every five years or so. It protects and prolongs the life of asphalt parking lots.

Now this guy might have been a scammer but seal coating is not a scam.

Coating itself isn't a scam for sure. But guys like this basically just smear used motor oil all over your driveway and tell you to let it dry for a few days (as normal with coatings). Then by the time you realize the shit is NEVER going to dry they are already in the next city running their scam and you are SOL.

Probably true. Was reading this and it sounded like everybody thought the seal coating itself was a scam. I've always dealt with large asphalt companies for my properties.

My grandma got taken by an asphalt scam in rural Indiana. Some guy sounding Irish claiming to be like some christian missionary or something sweet talked my grandma out of nearly $1,500.

It is. Redmond and Sammamish are getting hit with a bunch of this stupid junk. At bella botega, they were breaking into cars and looking for addresses on insurance cards and whatnot, then breaking in becuase they knew you were in the theater, so they had a couple hours.

Also a lot of people are being "bussed" in to try and "sell" magazines door to door. One of my buddies had his house broken into when the panhandler went door to door. His neighbor answered the door for the guy, and didnt buy anything, then watched as the guy went to my buddy's house next door, knock, wait, and head to the backyard where he broke a glass door and broke in.

If there was a neighbor I didn't like and they were on vacation or something, I'd have the scammer coat their asphalt and afterwards tell the scammer I don't live there.

Double win!

My personal favorite is the "shingle sealer spray" scams that make the rounds.

Yeah, we'll spray this shit on your roof, and it will make your shingles last another 20 years!

Turns out, they're spraying diesel fuel . . .

I live in a rual community. A few years a local guy had scammers coat his drive. They came to the house and presented him a bill for $17,000.

He wrote them a check and after they left got to thinking that was more than he paid to have the whole drive asphalted

So he calls the bank to stop payment on the check. The banker said they are here trying to cash the check right now.

So the banker goes back to the guys and said I can't cash this check. For one, we don't have $17,000 cash in the bank and two, the man that wrote the check just called and stopped payment.

The next day he gets a call from their Mom who tries to explain that they weren't trying to cheat him, her boys just weren't good at math, it should be $1,700, LOL.

I think he ended up paying them $1000.
