July 28th 1945, B-25 Bomber hits the Empire State Building.

I was digging through some totes of books I have here and ran across one I read a few years ago "The Sky is falling" (Arthur Weingarten) about the
morning that a B-25 bomber hit the Empire State Building at the 79th floor.

It's one of those stories that not a lot of folks have heard about or (if they're old enough) remember and thought I'd see what the hive's thoughts are
on it because it "sounds" like an urban legend that just happens to be true.

One story from that day that sticks out is the one of Betty Lou Oliver. She was injured in the impact and was loaded into an elevator by rescue
personnel to get her down to the street. They didn't know at the time that one of the engines from the plane had separated and trashed the
cables and, as soon as the doors closed they heard a "bang" (As the last of the cables snapped) and she fell 75 floors. What's amazing is that
she LIVED and holds the record for longest survived elevator fall !!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Lou_Oliver
"Once the elevator doors closed, the cables snapped and Oliver plummeted 75 stories to the basement.[2] She screamed all the way down when falling in the elevator. Oliver survived but again had to be rescued and was later treated at the hospital for serious injuries. The thousand feet of elevator cable had fallen to the bottom of the shaft, creating a softer landing surface."

Another good read is that of Gloria Pall. She was an 18yr old Jewish USO worker who had been turned down for a job at the Catholic War Relief Services
(The office that the plane hit) because she wasn't Catholic.

Some pic's from that day.

There's a couple of shots of dead bodies in this vid' so NSFW/kids in some cases.

And that was the first thing I thought of the morning of September Eleventh.
When my friend Aaron told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center the first words out of my mouth were, "Like in WWII?"

I read a book about it about 20 years ago and I suspect it's the same one. What's the Copyright date?

I also remember reading one about a fire at a Catholic school in Chicago that was written about the same time. Anyone read that one?

I'm thinking it might be 670 gallons of fuel versus 23,980...

Yes unfortunately most people are so fucking stupid when it comes to well....anything that they think a plane should leave a exact cut out of its self, kind of like this.

That, and the Empire State Building is a hell of a lot tougher than the Twin Towers were, in terms of construction.

They told us about the accident when we visited the building. Lots of steel made a difference.
