In this thread we are talking Sofas
I am in the market for a new sofa. I want something VERY comfortable, like sit down and start dozing. I need a leather couch because of dog hair. I also want something a decent size. Preferably a reclining
I dont know much about couches, except I like reclining back in one.
What brand(s) do you prefer and why? What brands are good.
poll incoming.
Sorry, I only know about sofas, divans and Davenports. Good luck!

Just go to a store and find what's comfortable. I work a large furniture retailer and just about every leather reclining sofa is made in China anyways, so find what's most comfortable for you and get it. Your price range will dictate a lot of what you are looking for, especially with regards to real or imitation leather, manual or electric, etc.

how is la z boy? mediocre, poor? I am looking at spending 2500 to 3k
La z boy is good, they do have some stuff that is made in America, but you should have no trouble in your price range. Are you just looking for a normal Sofa, or a full sectional? Because with what you can spend you can get a very very nice single sofa.
I have a reclining La-z-boy upstairs and a non-reclining one downstairs in the gameroom. Both are excellent.
If possible, buy from a local dealer instead of a La-Z-Boy showroom. Local places will usually haggle with you better.
Lazy Boy are nice....
I looked at this one...
about in that price range...

it doesnt really matter, we have a sectional right now and dont mind it either one would be fine. Ive been looking at Ikea and it looks as if it is styled to be PostModern or 50s style, doesnt appear very comfortable.

Then you'll probably be best of just going to a good mid-high end furniture retailer nearby and trying out stuff on the showroom. It's hard to recommend something good because everybody is different, but at your budget there are many extremely comfortable and high quality options. One thing to remember is that most retailers have tremendous mark-ups too, so you should be able to talk your way down at least 25-30% off on just about anything most companies offer.
Stickley. Mission.

awesome thank you man, very helpful
Do you have The Dump nearby? I bought my bed, dresser and couch at The Dump. Of course, there's a 50/50 chance that I got ripped off, but I'm happy with my furniture so I don't really care.
I don't know about leather but my Crate & Barrel set was made in North Carolina. My series is discontinued; it was the Troy series queen size sleeper and accompanying loveseat.
My set is microfiber and has resisted some very nasty stains ... one time I lay down on it with an uncapped pen in my pocket and didn't realize the ink was leaking into my jeans or sofa cushions until I got up. I quickly pulled all the foam out and ran the covers under water and scrubbed them with soap. The stains came out after a good bit of work. I'd buy them again.
Edit: the
Axis Leather sleeper couch from Crate & Barrel is also made in North Carolina. If you want to avoid China made goods, it may be a good option for you. If you don't need the sleeper option it is $400 less (about three grand).

Your best bet is to go to a few furniture stores, check out what they have and find something you like.
You're a sofa???
AND you can
talk????!?!???!

Just don't get a piece of crap Ashley leather couch. Flexsteel leather couches are nice and sturdy, with thick leather.

none of the brands you have listed in your poll would qualify as "good".
a quality leather couch from Ikea? comes complete with allen head fasteners.
so:
go to a mid-tier furniture store near you, for example an Ethan Allen home furnishings shop.
see what brands they have, sit on the couches, ask questions, etc.
no one on the internet knows what you want in couch.

I personally like the old-school stuff from the 60's and 70's. Long and not covered with leather or vinyl. Perfect for watching TV and
napping on....

(speaking of their Mission / Craftsman stuff only, I know nothing about their normal looking upholstered lines)
Their wood is gorgeous and their construction techniques are old-school fine craftsmanship like one rarely sees anymore. It is the kind of stuff that could be passed down generation to generation.

Another place selling stuff that I have seen up close and know is outstanding is Kloter Farms:
http://www.kloterfarms.com/page.cfm?p=16391 their mission stuff is made for them by Amish folks, I believe.
Hancock & Moore.
I wouldn't get anything from your list.
IMO, a sofa should:
(a) be made in Italy
(b) have leather upholstery
... and no, that doesn't mean it has to be horrendously expensive. Look in the right places and wait for sales, and stuff like Natuzzi can be very affordable.
It's true that pretty much anything in a chain furniture store is going to be import (Asia).
However there are some brands that are still made in the USA w/ US materials...in fact they just opened a new wing on a building at the furniture trade show specifically for US made upholstery
If I had the room for furniture in my store, I would stock this brand:
http://www.lancerfurniture.com/
US made, all HR foam (furniture grade foam of 1.8lb density or higher), dovetailed hardwood frames, a nice selection of upholstery, and fair prices.
ETA: a standard sofa should retail about $1100-$1400 from then, I don't know what their recliner versions go for off hand.
Speed
Natuzzi.
I bought a set of black Natuzzi leather furniture when I moved out 18 years ago, and its still perfect. Buy once, cry once, etc.

Exactly.
My wife and I have four sofas in the house, and all of them are Italian leather; two are Natuzzi.
The oldest Natuzzi we bought around 10 years ago, and still looks perfect - and we've had between two and four cats in the house that entire time.
... and we've never paid over $2000 for
any sofa, in fact the old Natuzzi was around $1000.
My couches were approaching 10 years old and the wife wanted new ones. La-Z boy now has what I wanted back then,
electric motor driven foot rests.!!1!!!1
In good arfcom fashion, I bought 2. 8 weeks lead time. I am about 2 weeks into it now.
Lifetime warranty on frame. 3yr warranty on motors. $140 total for stainguard, which I usually never buy. MADE IN USA.
Only buy an italian couch if you need it to match your purse.

Natuzzi leather is pretty low rent.

Yep. It's not the most expensive stuff by any means. My Mom just spent about 6k on some hideous couch from Macy's or something like that (gotta have that custom shade of dark tan!); I paid about 2.5k for a couch, captains chair, ottoman, and love seat, and that is back before I bothered negotiating a better price on stuff.
Quality furniture is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, I think. Lot of people (usually the sort with boobies and soft voices) want to redecorate every few years anyways, so why make or buy something that actually lasts?
I like sofas with plastic covering them.
Damn I wish I had enough money to spend 3K on a couch.

Get it when the store offers the 1 year same as cash deals, pay a little at a time over the course of a year, no interest.
That is what I did a few years ago for new stuff for my house. A couch and loveseat were around $4500 from Ashley Furniture and they are still perfect.
I've spent some time sitting on these, but didn't pull the trigger.
Good thing as my wife bought new and saved me valuable knife money.
