Did they do that after or before the LEO markings?

What's the difference between the M4 and M4A1?

Based on the serials, I'd guess that the M4 is actually a SP6920. Those have always had different rollmarks (and serials) than the LE6920s.

Apparently, from a post I just read in the Colt forum, they are still using the Law Enforcement Carbine rollmark on at least some models of LE6920.

LE6920 and SP6920 are both roll-marked "M4" - I believe SP's are made by "Colt Mfg" and LE's by "Colt Defense" .

"M4A1" is the SOCOM model from "Colt Defense".

I believe (but am not sure) "Colt's Law Enforcement Carbine" roll-mark is no more.

The new 6920's are roll-marked very closely to the Colt factory machineguns ..........

It isn't that simple.

The Colt LE rollmark lives... But is now only shipped directly to LE departments.

A while back, Colt decided they'd make a new version of the 6920 on which they remove the LE rollmarks, replace it with simply "M4 Carbine", and change it from LE6920 to SP6920 on the box.

Some of these say Colt Defense. Others Colt MFG... There have been a lot of odd changes to the rollmarks lot to lot.

Thus far they all appear to be made from the same parts by the same crews, unlike other commercial models that are FUBARed.

I have an SP6920 at my shop right now marked Colt Defense... Others from the same shipment marked Colt MFG...

Seems almost like no two SP6920s have identical markings right now...

Do they all still come with an M16 bolt carrier whether they are LE marked or not?

Yep, and here's one marked "M4 Carbine" with a "LE" S/N and made by "Colt Defense" - don't know about the box: www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_29/216533_New_LE6920_with_pics.html

They have only changed the rollmarks. The rifles are, thus far, unchanged mechanically. They offer nifty furniture options now though.

But to answer your question, 6920s never came with M16 bolt carriers.

6920s come with actual M4 bolt carriers. Colt has not made M16 bolt carriers in the time the 6920 has existed.

Just because a bolt carrier is full mass, does not make it an M16 bolt carrier.

Colt does not produce bolt carriers for the M16. They haven't since they lost the contract to FN. They do, however, make bolt carriers for the M4.

While Colt and FN bolt carrier groups are interchangeable, there are very real differences between them. Even if devoid of markings, someone knowledage will be able to tell the two apart. Examples would be NDT scars, differences in stress relieving, staking tool type, etc.

Again, Colt does not make bolt carriers for M16s. But they do make bolt carriers for M4s, which they also use on 6920 and similar models.

"M16 type bolt carrier" does not mean "M16 bolt carrier", likewise "M4 profile barrel" does not equal "Colt production M4 barrel".

Nomenclature is not always reality. Reality is that the bolt carriers Colt uses now are taken from M4 production, not M16.
