Dumb question. How to tell if its copper, or just copper plated?

I bought a copper strip from the plumbing department at Home Depot. It's about 2" x 12". I need a piece the size of a postage stamp to be used for thermal conductivity.

I get it home and cut it. The inside looks like steel. Its not copper colored.

Did I just buy a copper COATED piece of metal, or does copper sometimes not look like copper?

Use magnet. If it sticks it is steel with copper plate.

If its hanger strip and copper color it is almost definently just copper coated steel.

Did you pay for a copper bar or just grab one of those holey strips and assume it was solid copper?

What size / thickness you looking for?

If you need it today, a local telecom place should have a rack grounding bar in various widths and thickness .

I hear there's extra copper inside these, free for the taking.

To prevent electrocution, spray gold spray paint around your mouth and nose.

You're welcome.

use an old penny. You know how to tell it it's copper, right?

Not sure of what thickness you need, but if you're going back to depot, check in the roofing section. They used to sell copper flashing.

(bring your magnet)

They work fine IF you install them correctly and deep enough. Could you imagine what the dopers would do if there were pounds of copper for the taking at every house?

Pre 1982. About half of the 1982 pennies aren't copper. You can tell which one you've got by dropping it on a table.

I'll bet you can get your hands on a magnet somewhere around your house.
