Bruise and pain after blood draw: normal or see doc?

Had some blood drawn saturday morning for a life insurance test, big burly lady came to the house. Normally when I get blood drawn it's only painful for an hour at the most. I know I'm a wuss but it hurt for a few days and today a decent sized bruise appeared. Still slightly tender but I put up a bunch of lights on the house without noticing so not awful. MIL is a nurse and said it's a venipuncture hematoma or something, dead blood under the skin etc. She said take ibuprofen and put heat on it. I looked it up on the net and she was telling me not to as it would just make me paranoid, but I should see a doctor. If it's not a big deal why do I need to go in?

Your arm is going to rot and fall off.

Or

Relax, the same thing happens to my 82 year old grandmother when she gets blood taken.

Yes, bruising happens. You'll be fine.

I've been stuck with more needles than a heroin addict. During one of my many MRIs it took four nurses six tries to get the needle in for contrast dye. They had to have an ER nurse finally come up and do it.

The bruise is away from the needle mark or I would not think it was a big deal. It's odd looking. It also showed up 4 days after the blood draw so didn't seem common to me.

whoever did the draw might have missed the vein and hit the muscle. you will have a bruise for a while, nothing to worry about, you are probably not in danger of dying. it happens some times, cowboy up.

I've given blood several times, and only one of the times I got a bruise that was the size of a silver dollar. I was a bit worried and called the blood place, and they said it was a common occurrence. Just an imperfect blood draw. Sure enough, it healed up in a week or so and I haven't had a problem since, six years later.

Those are caused by ham fisted cunt full of don't give a fuck.

Perforation, blowing out and muscle hits are NOT normal, nor it is they press the gauze down while the remove the needle...That is a sign of a sadistic cunt who needs a complaint filed against her.

The American Red Cross has a blood drive where I work about every 3-4 months.
Usually the girls are pretty good getting a vein . Yet more than once I've had a bad bleed. The first time I had a marble size knot swell up at the needle site. Then a bruise showed up a day or so later. No pain though.
The second time the girl with the needle hurt me right off, usually it's just a stick, this bitch stabbed me, my arm ached a few hours after I donated and I could immediately see dark blood under the skin. That one was bad, I had a bruised band about 3 inches wide around the entire circumference of my elbow. My wife was pissed. She called them and they were really concerned. Told me to get to the emergency room if the pain persisted. Then they called everyday to check to see that it had not gotten any worse.

[grammar Nazi]"Ham-fisted" should always be hyphenated, even when it precedes "cunt". Come to think of it, so should "don't-give-a-fuck" in this setting.[/grammar Nazi]

Doc has me get a routine blood test a couple times a year.
I have had Phlebotomist's draw blood that would not even require the tape they put on after.
Others that seemed like they were pounding in nails. Skill of the individual I guess.

Years ago I slipped on some ice.
Came down hard on my left thigh.Hurt but didn't think any thing of it till a few hours later when my pants started feeling tight.
Had a bruise / swelling that was about the size of a half tennis ball on my outside left thigh.Went to the ER. Doc was impressed with the size but said nothing was broke so it would eventually go down. It did but the accumulated blood drained to my feet over the next week or so

Everytime I have ever had blood drawn it is more of a "get your shit and get out thing" vs holding a finger on it and taking up space for 2 minutes.

Plus usually I get the blood sucker that can't do it and pokes both arms. Keeping pressure on 2 wounds while getting my shit and getting out is hard.

Same happened to me with a sharp blow from the edge or a skateboard under the inside lower edge of my kneecap. A softball size knot swelled up then a few days later it turned black. Once the blood drained to my ankle my entire leg from knee to ankle was purple then green the yellow. Took several months to disappear.

OK but shit like this pisses me off. I have thousands of draws from tough people and never perforated a vein on a draw, nor did the extra slice and pull by pressure pulling it out.

Having just taught phlebotomy to a class full of MA students, I can tell you firsthand- the number of people who insist on applying pressure before the needle is even out of the arm is astonishing. But I'd say it's usually more "don't-give-a-fuck" than sadism.

Can't you walk out and then hold your finger on it for two minutes? I here people all the time say " I dont know whats wrong with that girl at XXXXXX she had to hit me in the Hand?" not thinking that he is 60# over weight and didn't follow instructions about being Hydrated....some people allways want to blame shit on others. I have Warfarin Pt's that come in saying "Look at the bruise they left on me at the ER when I went in for a Chest Pain" well Simple Simon your on medication to keep you from forming clots your veins will leak after a stick.......Put pressure on the site and MAN UP!

Some people are better than others at drawing blood. I've had bruises from some and not a sign of anything from others.

I've told bad ones to go get someone who knew what they were doing. I've told good ones that they are awesome and deserve a promotion.

The idiots that push down while the needle is still in the vein should have their face broke. You don't put pressure on until the needle is out...

It's not a bruise from bumping into a dollhouse, it's blood accumulating under the skin. Excuse me for being concerned. Not all of us can take a piece of shrapnel and mosy on over to IHOP without feeling pain.

I believe that's what the problem was. The bruise is 2 inches away from the insertion point or I wouldn't have mentioned it. Just odd.

I donate blood every other month.
Bruising and pain are normal unless the bruise is larger than a quarter or the pain does extends up or down the arm more than a couple inches from the impact crater.

I watched a nurse tear a donars vein open with the needle when he jerked back as she started the insertion.
Watching the blood spray hit that curtain was an impressive sight!

I.m betting he bruised up pretty good too!
