Could an air rifle kill a raccoon? (Not just a freak shot)

Hearing some "experts" on another board suggest an air rifle could consistently dispatch raccoons. I think the raccoons may take a month to die from infection, but good clean kills would be few and far in between.

Any experience or thoughts?

Also you big shooters..........how many of you shoot 1000 rounds a week, week in week out?

With the right air rifle most definitely.

Depends on the air rifle. They got some now can reliably take out deer.

Absolutely. There are air rifles out there that are pushing over 1000fps. While the projectile isn't exactly large....there's something to be said for velocity. I have no doubt a high powered air rifle could dispatch coons.

Airgun or 20 years ago? Maybe not. Today's airguns? Hell yes. Might not drop them like a sack of taters but I wouldn't consider it inhumane with good pellets.

A Red Ryder BB gun to the right part of the head would likely cause it to lose consciousness. Have you ever been shot with a BB gun /air rifle... I have, and it freaking hurts.

Head shots are the trick. I used to kill rabbits and muskrats with with an airgun that fired at something like 650 FPS. They weren't maimed, it straight kilt 'em.

Raccoon skulls are not all that thick.

Some of the air rifles being sold today can almost duplicate or exceed .22 LR performance, and .22 LR is certainly capable of killing coons with impunity.

Just did last week with a gamo big cat. Headshots work really well at close range, even with Beeman hollow point pellets.

I don't know. I have a Dynamit Nobel RWS 34 that's about 25 years old that I'm sure will lay one out.

Several air rifles sold ten years ago could do it, today there are many more powerful ones for a lot less money.

below, one of dozens available

As a kid, My neighbor asked me to kill a raccoon that had eaten some of her chickens. I shot it in the head twice with a ~650fps Crossman pellet gun using pointed pellets. The pellets bounced off its skull without doing too much damage.
I'm sure a more powerful air gun would get the job done, but I'd rather just grab a .22lr.

yes..........head shots will be very effective, body shots will just wound the shit out of it.

flat head lead pellets, this way the blunt force provides or of a slam for internal bleeding and if they penetrate the lead poisoning will kill them eventually.

Hell, Lewis and Clark used air rifles to hunt big game on their expedition.

Okay us Red Ryder guys are living in the past.........

How many shooters out there shoot 1000 rounds a week, all the time?

Not BB guns.........

Back about 2001, I tried to dispatch a raccoon with a Benjamin/Sheridan .177 1000 FPS airgun.
Using "hunting" pellets, I put one right into a juvenile's left eye socket from about 15 ft away. Messed him up bad but did not kill him. I ended up having to put him out of his misery by crushing his skull with a shovel.

Yes, I am a little *itch, but I still feel bad about it to this day. I don't mind dispatching 'critters when they are a nuisance and or vermin, but if I have to kill something, I want it to be clean, quick, and done as humanely as possible

I have to ask...what does that have to do with raccoons and airguns?

Yup. I've taken down good sized groundhogs with my RWS 350 Magnum .22 from around 15-20 yards ... easily landing headshots.

Nothing that I can think of, just a question.

Did I violate some golden rule by asking another question?

I don't know anyone that shoots that much, but I bet there are people out there who do.

My experience....no. Three shot square to the chest did not knock him out. He licked it and walked off.

I was on a boat and saw one on shore sleeping in a deer stand it didn't move after the 1st shot and was completly K.O. after 2 shots.
Was it a good/lucky shot? Maybe. Would I trust an air rifle to 1 shot 1 kill a raccoon everytime in all circumstances? No way.
But if your a good shot, and your targets not moving I would trust an air rifle.

back in the days when I would coon hunt (with dogs) we'd be amazed at the number of shots they could take to the face with a .22

plenty can - most can not do it reliably. I would expect a Benjamin Marauder (or other higher power rifle) that shoots a .22 pellet at 1,000fps would have not real problems with a head shot.

fwiw, I think a steroid tuned Sheridan can hit 800fps, which is not that shabby.

It would not be all that difficult with any modern pcp. Of course that is actually aiming rather than blasting. Plus 1k of crosman .177 pellets would could cost you about $ 5, 1k of .223 is going to cost a bit more than that.

I've shot quite a few coons, possums, and skunks with an air rifle (Beeman R10). We'd drive around the neighbor's pecan orchard with a flashlight and do some pest control. If you're hearing that a pellet gun won't kill coons, it's utterly untrue.

Headshot = insta-dead, JFK style
Heart/Lung = pretty much insta-dead

every time.

There are a bunch of air and spring air rifles that can take out just about any game . They even make big bore air rifles in 50cal.

Late night on the sportsman channel they have a boring show all about air rifles.
