I am ready to start my second batch of applewein and wondering about sanitizing. I have a 6 gallon plastic carboy,a rubber stopper and plastic airlock. Also I have a bottle of hydrogen peroxide sitting in the closet and wonder if this will be useful.

Don't use peroxide!

Get some Saniclean by Five Star

You can use Potassium Metabisulfite, but I really like Saniclean.

PBW is good for removing any organic material, saniclean sanitizes.

Star San is basically the regular version of Saniclean. Saniclean is low foam.

If you pump it through a diaphram pump, definately use Saniclean!

I use Star San as well.

I use Starsan to sanitize, and oxy clean to clean my fermenters, bottles, and kegs.

I have three kegs, filled with hot oxy water, soaking in the back yard.

Good stuff, but you want to use unscented oxyclean. The scented crap will give your rings a smell. I like the "Sunclean" generic from Wal-Mart. $2.89 a container.

oxy is amazing stuff. I usually mix up five gallons when cleaning the fermenter, then recycle it to clean other stuff.
I pan fried chicken yesterday, using bacon grease. I filled the pan with oxyclean and let it sit for awhile. Came right off with minimal scrubbing.

Also, I bought the StarSan at my LHBS. I was over at a buddies and saw that he had kegged 5 gallons of starSan, and had it under pressure. When he wanted some, he just dispensed it. I thought it was a pretty slick Idea, so I copied him.

I use oxyclean (free or unscented or whatever it is in the big tub), then starsan.

not even that good for cuts. He could clean his ears with it. Get some liquid stool softener capsules, then dilute the h2o2 and rinse them out. Works like a charm.

If you're in NEO, then you might want to check out Grape and Granary for brewing and wine making supplies. http://www.grapeandgranary.com/

I usually do my bulk grain ordering through there online and pick up the next day.

I do it caveman style with bleach.

Just make sure you rinse well.

For final sanitizing I use Idophor. Made per bottle directions. Been doing this for well over 15 years.

Since I just switched to Better Bottles (plastic carboys) and kegs, my BIL introduced me to Oxy Pro. He quit using Oxy Clean when they started adding fragrance. Maybe not all OC but smell is no good for beer equiptment.

The Oxy Pro can be had at Safeway stores, low cost and fragrance free. Works great for initial cleaning of the gunk...I mix a batch into a rinsed carboy, and a micro fiber dish rag, swirl away and it's clean in minutes. Easier than the brush method I used for years on glass carboys.

I've been using bleach with no noticeably (to me) bad effects for a while now except...

...I just noticed that some of my glass carboys have some mild pitting in them. I probably used too much bleach, but I think I'll be switching to StarSan or Iodophor now. That and rinsing is getting to be one more pain.

I just use bleach for everything except sanitizing kegs. I'll use star-san for that.

Star-san is also good for clothing (especially undershirts) when it gets that perpetual stench––the kind that you think you managed to wash out, but that shows up soon after you put it back on. Just soak in a star-san solution, and no more stench.

I have done about 15 AG batches. I always mix up a full five gallons of Star-San if I'm brewing or bottling. I started out with a 2/3 full container of Star-San that my buddy gave me when I started brewing. I just now ran out. I think it's a good value.

Oxyclean is esentially sodium percarbonate and can be purchased fairly inexpensively from a food product supplier.

+1 for star-san and PMBS. It doesn't take much. The boil is for everything that you don't get.

...and don't use plastic. One bad batch....and you could have spent the money on stainless and glass.....be a man, buy the good shit.

better bottle PET is pretty good.

People make beer in oak barrels too.

Use some PBW and some San Star as per directions and you will have no worries.

If you know of a good stainless steel fermentor for cheap, let me know. :)

1) Go buy a huge jug of Star-San
2) Mix per directions, put it in a spray bottle
3) Wet down every piece of equipment before you use it
4) Never worry again
4b) Use a second type of sanitizer (such as iodophor) every 10th batch or so just to make sure you don't grow any "special" bacteria

#3, you don't rinse it away with water?

I usually have starsan foam everywhere when I start putting my wort in the fermenter. I also have it everywhere when I'm putting my beer in the kegs. Never had an issue with off flavors from it.

I mix up 5 gallons of Starsan when I'm going to brew. I use it to sanitize everything in the brewing process, then store it in a carboy. When I move from the primary to the secondary the carboy is already sanitary as it's been storing Starsan for 2 weeks. I use that same batch of Starsan to sanitize the bottling bucket a few weeks later, and also to sanitize the bottles or keg. How long will it remain effective after it's mixed? I have no idea but I have use it after a month or two and never had a bad batch of beer (due to infection). I toss it after the brewing cycle is complete.

Aparently you want to get the oxy clean free, I think that's what it's called, and I think it's in a green container.
I just use pbw because I'm a 5 star whore.
