I know that beer is negatively affected by light, is cider?

Don't know, but if you're wondering which ones to buy I'd suggest darker bottles so you don't need to buy them later when you make something that needs them.

Light effects the hops in beer, and since cider has no hops, I think you're good to go.

Nope, just the hops in beer. My apfelwein carboys sit on my kitchen near a window and get plenty of sunlight, never has hurt it. Beer goes downstairs away from the sun.

Thanks guys!

I have a line on some 1 liter Acqua Panna bottles that would be perfect for cider. They are pop top and seem to be thick enough to do a little bottle carbing.

The link shows the bottles that I am looking at, has anyone ever used them before?

Might want to bring your capper with you and see how well they cap. Some bottles have a smaller ridge on the top, that makes it difficult to seal the cap fully.

Excellent point, a lot of my stubby bottles are like this.

Ok!

I texted the guy from the craigslist ad and bought 60 1 liter bottles for $10. In looking at them they look like a really big beer bottle. The thickness of the glass is similar to other bottles that hold carbed beverages so I think I am good to go.

We will be using the cobalt blue 32 oz. flip tops for some of our first batch of cider and the rest will go into the Acqua Panna bottles and be capped like beer bottles. At 16 cents per bottle, I figured they were worth a try. If they don't hold up to carbonation then I will use them to bottle the Skeeter Pee that I am planning on making in the future.

anyone ever use mason jars? I've got some mead and I'm thinking about bottling it in mason jars. Think it'll work?

If you're not carbonating, it'll probably be OK.

I've heard that Mason jars won't handle the pressure properly. I found this surprising, but I've never tried it myself.

The jar is probably sturdy enough to handle it. The lids are crap and I'm not surprised they won't hold. I don't see why mead wouldn't work. If it were me I'd try it in one.
