"Automatic Drip Grind" coffee...

I finally bought a Bunn coffeemaker. The instructions say to use "automatic drip grind" coffee. I see it in the store, already ground, but I grind my own beans fresh for every pot. How course/fine should I grind the beans?
I have tried a very course grind. Meh.
And a fine grind. Makes a mess.
And a medium grind. The "drip" must be more like a "spray" because the amount of water going into the filter causes the ground coffee up and over the sides of the filter, and I am getting grounds into my coffee... and a very messy filter basket.
Am I doing something wrong? I know this shouldn't be rocket surgery, but I am perplexed.
