Curious , why is the North Dark?
I've noticed the historians jewel rests on this chair.
(I understand if you do not wish to post in the open forum)
Has to do with the first degree work. You already heard the answer. IM sent

Have you been attending lodge on extra meeting nights where the degrees are being conferred?
Does your lodge have a ritualistic instructor or a school of instruction?
Do you want to be a floor officer?
Getting involved with any of the above will teach you MUCH more than sitting on the sidelines and only going to the monthly meetings.

x2. It wasn't until I started putting on degrees and working with degree teams, both local and regional, that I really started learning all the work. Learning all the stations forward and back has been most helpful to me, and on occassion to the last minute fill ins needed here and there.
I've recently taken a chair this year, & my hearing aids are on order.
No Ritual instructor or School.
Meetings are 1st & 3rd Tuesdays every month, but officers must meet on the Sunday before each meeting to practice the opening, closing, or degree for that month.
My chair is in front of the SW so I do pick up what he is saying, but hear nothing the WM is communicating.

its great to hear that you are participating. when you get those aids you will realize what you have been missing and alot of the puzzles will fit together.

Lord I hope so, it's been very frustrating since being raised.
Sitting on the sidelines was far worse.

Thanks for participating bro. The aids will greatly help with everything.
traditionally there were no windows to illuminate the north side of solomons temple therefore it was always dark. masonically there is a bit more to it, but not something i'd post on an open forum.

I IM'd a short explanation of the origin. I have to admit, I am a little rusty though.

send it to me as well. we can compare notes.
Hearing Aids arrived, picking them up tomorrow.
Just in time for the Feb meeting.

guess you won't be in the north anymore

Why can't this be posted in open forum? And if you IMed this info to someone how do you know them to be a mason?
so far it's beyond obvious who is and is not a mason in this forum. and we have ways of vetting people
there is nothing secret about it but it involves some other explanations of masonic philosophy. there are lots of things you won't find masons discuss in an open forum. not because we are afraid them being said but because the obligations we take ask us not too. we are generally happy to discuss the philosophy in general but when get into the specifics of symbolism and degree work, that is reserved for those that have earned it.

Not to mention it's utterly pointless to provide such explanations of masonic philosophy in an open forum because even the explanations are yet even further deeply rooted in History, Philosophy, Religion, and other forms of
Context... The problem that would arise discussing such things with an uninformed and unenlightened individual is - they will know NOTHING of the CONTEXT and historical precedent through which a philosophy is granted credence and applicability. An unenlightened individual, not knowing the context, and also by nature, being incredibly closed-minded and intolerant of others' views, if he were to try arguing the points of whatever philosophy, he would feel justified and ignorantly believe he and his baseless opinions have a credible platform or basis upon which to stand with a counter-argument...
Many of these are the same geniuses (elsewhere, and even here on ARFCOM) that firmly believe that MORALITY is RELATIVE, and use their moral relativity to try justifying their own devious acts in Life...
These are the same geniuses that believe Drinking and Driving is a Victimless Crime... That stealing guns, ammo, food, and fuel from somebody's house while the owner is not home is somehow "Scavenging" and "Survival of the fittest" rather than STEALING, THEFT, or LOOTING... The same geniuses that feel it's perfectly okay to 'get a free pressure washer' from Walmart...
When discussing things with the unenlightened and the morally relativistic - their opinions and arguments often have no basis in reality & history, and they don't understand the full depth of context upon which countless philosophies are based!
Ergo, it is POINTLESS to try arguing with such unenlightened individuals, and thus it is just easier to keep them in the dark about the specifics and lessons of the numerous philosophies learned in Lodge/Valley/Temple... The wise course of action is to stand by your stated Obligations, honor your invoked Oaths, and just remain silent when people ask you detailed questions about certain things.
I'm excited to pick up my custom embroidered double-eagle hat tonight that finally arrived at my valley.

Which is why I went with icons.
Very well put by the Tyler.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, if I remember correctly it goes something like,"I shall not hold communication with a mad man."
this was the reason for the "forget me not" the Lunatic Fringe viewed the fraternity as a threat.
There is more to the story but this is the quick & dirty version.
It's only dark in the north and not in the south. The only reason I can figure is, they all moved to the north looking for jobs back when the auto union was going strong. Free and accepted masons stayed in the south. At least thats what someone told me, that was a 34th degree mason in the green lodge.

Wow, didn't realize we had such close ties to the auto trade.

Actually the forget me not was started in Germany during hitlers rule. Masonry was outlawed so the Brotherhood used the flower as a symbol whereby one Mason may know another.
