Help me Arfcom ZC.

I'm writing a zombie apoc themed story and would like the ZC dwellers to give their insight. One of the characters is early forties, former infantry. List a semi-automatic rifle or carbine and two pistols, either revolver or semi-auto or both, in common calibers, for his use. He's not a typical Arfcommer, nor did he have a ton of cash to blow. I'm gonna set a budget of say... 1200-1500 bucks. Have at it.

This sounds about right. SKS and a used pawn shop special revolver in .38 or .357. Should have a little dough left over for some ammo.

He got a terrific pawnshop find and got a camp carbine .45 Acp
And an old military 1911. Both uses same magazine and ammo.

you can get a ak for the price of most sks rifles nowadays. or pretty close to it. so ima go with a ak and maybe a iraqi chest rig from desert storm. he would have been in his early 20's or so then, its possible, unlikely though that he smuggled both back then. figure bayonet for the rifle too. secondhand 1911 or m9, and maybe a 10/22 or lever action .22

SKS (Was looking for something and got it cheap at that one gunshow I went to)

Beretta 92 (It's what I know. I dont carry it or nuthin, just sits by the bed)

Lookin for one rifle and two pistols so 10/22 is out. Someone pointed out most SKS rifles cost as much as some AKs, so I'm going with the latter. As for pistols, a police trade in Beretta 92F and a used S&W in .357 Mag. Thank you all for your contributions. You're all gentlemen and scholars.

A good listing. One thing to point out about the SKS and AK being the same cost, not TOO long ago, SKSs used to go for what Mosins do now. Your character is 40ish years old, so he would have been around and an adult when SKSs were a dime a dozen. Just a consideration. Good luck!

Given the budget, an AK or SKS would be a logical choice especially considering age and ex-military.Add in a good used autopistol and 22lr and your character should be set.
Another option within your budget would be a S&W M&P Sport.Within budget(I bought mine for $650.00,new) and a logical choice for ex-military.

You could easily pair up a Marlin Camp Carbine in 9mm with two police trade-in S&W model 59's or a Marlin Camp Carbine in .45 with a pair of used 1911 Springfields or any other flavor 1911 model.

Thanks for all the pointers. I've decided on him finding a good deal on an AK, along with a trade in Beretta 92F and a S&W Model 13.

My primary idea regarding his choices is the Beretta came first because he was familiar with it, and the Smith was inherited recently. The AK was a recent purchase bought off a family member who felt generous, and his main motivation to pick it up was increasing unrest in his locale.

Get a used ar-15 from a local shop, find em around $800
Get two used M-9's (usually police trade in's) $2-250 each.
$1200-$1300 total
Or get a new WASR-10 for $600 and you can up your budget on the two M-9's

i think those are fine picks. if you really had your heart set on the sks, the d model takes ak mags. but i think the ak is the better choice. i know a few vets and just about everyone of them has a ak. have fun writing your story.
