 Storm Trooper armor??

I've been thinking about this for a while and I think Star Wars Imperial Storm Trooper armor would work well after Zday. I would think that the hard plastic that would be difficult for a set of undead jaws to lock on to. And it may be slick enough that they might not be able to grip the arms/legs/torso/head very well. The regular helmet doesn't look like it offers good visibility, but the Scout Trooper helmet looks like it would work out okay. Plus you can be lazy and not actually have to make your own armor. I'd go for one of the black colored sets instead of the normal white armor. I have no idea how well ventilated the armor is, I suppose it could be an oven in there.

Is my thinking on this pretty decent? Or am I going to die a slow, painful death?

And yes, I am a big fan of the original Star Wars trilogy.

Looks like the Scout Trooper helmet would limit your peripheral vision a good bit.

You could always drill small holes all over the armor to vent it and make it cooler to wear - I doubt a zombies tooth is going to get through a little 1/4" hole and infect you

Be aware of the gaps in the armor around the joints though. And watch out for those Force-wielding Jedi zombies

the only venting it as the joints. i would think its a oven. i seen one guy add a battery operated fan to his helmet. the shin and forearm guards would be the most practical if not wearing the entire suit. but not sure how well it wears without the rest. i think some of the guys with it said it chafes and pinches in some bad spots

Brotherhood of Steel armor would be awesome.

hmm. I suppose the main worry would be arm and leg protection. I guess you would only need a full suit if you planned on getting up close and personal often. Although as long as you don't plan on using it at sci-fi conventions before Zday, you could modify/cut/butcher the hell out of it to make it more comfortable.

Hell, body armor around here is a bitch May-Sept, I can only imagine how hot it would get baking inside of that suit on a 110F day......

Um, Ewoks took down Storm Troopers without effort. I can't imagine that Zombies will find it much of a challenge.

They'll crack you like a crab and eat the succulent flesh inside the shell.

Not to mention you aren't allowed to shoulder weapons, or hit any targets, even at center mass while you wear it.

This. I have a set. You do not want to be running around in one of those if the zombie apocolypse comes.

Right idea, wrong material. Try this instead, all the fashion, most of the bite protection, and better mobility:
Leather Stormtrooper

If you watch the movies, the armor had no noticable defensive properties. When they attacked Leia's ship, it showed Storm Troopers going down to single shots from the blasters carried by the rebels. In the fight with the Ewoks, they were dropped by stone weapons. The purpose of the "armor" doesn't seem to really be in protecting the person wearing it. The purpose of the "armor" would more likely be as a psychological weapon. Instead of facing down a man, you were facing down a faceless horde.

I'm pretty sure that Zeds don't lose the innate human emotion also known as "Smear the Queer" upon crossing over to the land of the walking dead. You're making yourself a target.

In other words, dress up as Vader.

I'm a member of the 501st Legion imperial costuming group & I've had a set of the ABS hard plastic stormtrooper armor for many years, and I would say no to a long term use for zombie protection. It is very uncomfortable for long periods and actually pinches and cuts if you crouch and/or other movements besides normal walking, etc. Not only that, but long term wear can cause heat exhaustion and I've actually seen a few go down walking in parades in the hot sun. For long periods you have to install fans just to draw in enough air to breathe and keep them from fogging up the inside of the helmet. Not to mention you can't see a damn thing out of a stormtrooper helmet. Very limited on visability. The Biker Scout helmet would offer better visability theoretically, but the armor is so much less, you would be better off with a standard kevlar vest and gloves and still be able to breathe. Not to mention the things crack and have other failures that make it unsuitable for reliable armor IMHO.

But you're thinking is in the right direction.

As to the durability issues of the ABS plastic, has anyone tried fiberglass or carbon fiber? Kevlar impregnated fiberglass would seem like a good choice in theory. After it is formed, it could them be painted white or black, depending on the use.

For the fogging issue, has anyone tried creating a partition, similar to how my MSA Advantage 1000 full-face respirator is set up? Toying around with it in my mind, the piece would almost have to be a seperate item from the helmet. Similar to a half face respirator being worn under the helmet. Instead of cartridges, you could have hoses that link to the two points at the lower front of the mask and set them up as both intake and exhaust. If you are using a voice amp with the helmet, that could then be installed into the helmet.

Edit: Double post, got a session timed out error, so I hit submit again and it ended up doubling.

Anyone wearing anysort of full armor is going to be a zombie happy meal in no time. The weight added/reduced mobility is much more of a detriment than the minimal extra protection it would add. I would much rather be able to run than be able to maybe resist one bite before I got overrun and they got through the armor anyway.

+1. I read it twice. Not really Zombies, but zombie-ish. There is a couple of names everyone is familiar with, but that's about it.

Some survivors holed up somewhere were pretty messed up.

ETA* The review mentiosn Han Solo and Chewy so there you have it.

The idea is brilliant. A penal ship gets stranded and stumbles across what appears to be an abandoned Star Detroyer. Further inspection reveals that the Star Destroyer is housing a bunch of what are basically zombies and also the parts needed to get the penal ship underway again. The infection makes it back on board the penal ship, In short order the main characters, prisoners, are trapped on board in their cells as the infection spreads across the ship. Great set-up, right? Well, then the execution sucks. Sticking Han Solo and Chewbacca in it was lame as shit and unneccessary. Easily the biggest letdown in a book I've read in the past five years.

That and the communication the virus has with other groups of infected. The survivors on the flight deck was pretty demented, but one of the best parts.
