Please Explain to Me...
Maybe this stuff has been popular for some time and I'm just now noticing, or maybe not. But what's the deal with all the zombie stuff? Though it borders on the ridiculous and paranoid often times, at least I can understand all the doomsday/shtf/bugout stuff. But zombies? I don't recall a recent fad, movie, book, etc. that would explain it. Maybe a video game? Wouldn't know; not into them.
I'm just curious because it's now mainstream. I see targets, hear/read gun writers making references...hell, Hornady is making z-max bullets. I understand they're merely capitalizing on it. But that means it's "a thing". I just don't get it. It has a tinge of "nerd in mom's basement playing dungeons and dragons". I don't mean that in a bad way...
It seems to me that the appeal is that, if you are ready for the zombie outbreak, and can survive,
you are ready for just about anything..
Me, I`ll be riding around in a pilfered Brinks armored car, its got gun ports.
scruff
^^Scruffy hit the nail on the head; if you can prepare for a zed apocolypse, you can survive in just about any situation.
Mainly, becasue in zed land, the biggest threats are not the 'undead', but fellow humans in guise of bandits, cannibals, government.....
My friends and I always used Z-Day as a bit of a blanket "SHTF" identifier. Zombies just made getting ready for it fun.
Well, that's about as clear as mud.
Zombies are a fun way of talking about preparation for SHTF . If your prepared for zombies honestly what aren't you prepared for . other than a nuclear winter or a world ending even t like 2012 the movie which you can't really prepare for either . When we say zombies it covers a hole gambit of scenarios . Like A 28DAYS LATER type contagion or a Quarantine type contagion gone world wide . Or something as simple as a Katrina type national disaster or government collapse . The biggest key to survival is being prepared . This is why even the CDC is taking zombie readiness because if your ready for zombies your ready for almost anything . When the CDC says zombie readiness it's a lot less scary that saying If the SHTF your own your own so you better get ready .

ZED’s can come in many forms and fashions. Being prepared for disaster is first and foremost the most important aspect. As other posters have mentioned…. Z-Day is just a way to make preparedness more fun. I personally use the term Zombie very loosely and its most easily defined meaning for me is any person(s) that wish to do me harm, whether it be disaster, war, home invasion, etc. It’s a LOT more politically correct to make reference this way as well.
As for why companies like Hornady, etc. are jumping on the bandwagon, well it just makes good business sense. If the latest thing was lemon slushies you can bet your ass that Hornady will break out the “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” talons, tracer rounds, subsonic everything, etc. Blenders will be the latest craze instead of Khukri’s and tacticool M4’s.
I personally think that whatever it takes to get people “thinking” and preparing on their own will have a much better chance for a successful outcome of whatever might come at them. Nothing makes me more sick than to have a friend, etc. make a comment like “Hey when shit hits the fan, Im coming to your house. Look at all those guns and food. Oh yeah Im definitely coming here”……. Oh really? They get kinda butthurt when ya tell them that unless they show up with snatch, smokes or ammo its likely they wont make it past the first 100yd marker (that looks a lot like a utility marker) ;)
CDC uses it because like above, they are willing to try anything that gets people thinking about preparedness. It makes us stronger.
And there are others that use it in reference to our government, or their bosses, etc. when talking about their braindeadedness (yeah that made my spell checker puke a little bit).
It used to be funny.
It also is an easy way to be sort of politically correct when talking about certain things.
Because Zombies are interesting not to mention the idea of What if.... Is it completely out of the realm of possible... Not the dead walking but a rage sorta illness like 28 days

Yep it's been popular for QUITE some time.
I don't recall a recent fad, movie, book, etc. that would explain it. Maybe a video game?
Did you miss the most watched cable show of all time?
The Walking Dead (started last year now in it's second season)
Of course there are many popular books on the subject like
World War Z,
Day by Day Armageddon, and graphic novels like
The Walking Dead.
Did you miss the movies over the last 40+ years like Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead (recently remade), Day of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, etc?
Yes there are even a few video games as well.
Romero-esqu zombies (as opposed to Voodoo zombies) are a very popular theme for 'SHTF' type movies.

All the points were covered in this post.

It's a slow moving, target rich environment, what's not to love?

You must have been living under a rock then.
7 "Resident Evil" films spanning 2002-2010
Day of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Shun of the Dead
Zombieland
and countless other flicks and tv series from the 70's to today featuring zombies
Plenty of video games depicting them as well.
You may only notice it now because gun culture has snatched it up and stated making targets, ammo, guns, weapons, etc to sell their product.
Zombie culture is anything but new.
It's all in good fun for me. Some people seem to have forgotten how to have fun.
(Covered heavily in the previous posts...)
The first movie in the US was in the 20's with Bella Lugosi as the villain. It was a traditional Haitian/Santeria type zombie movie. You haven't been paying attention is all. We will help enlighten you to what all you are missing....including the far left liberal agenda. Just read on.....
My wife caught me a bit off guard once talking to a friend. She said "its a fun way to prepare for something serious". The CDC is correct, prepare yourself and family for zombies then you will be better prepared for any natural disaster to happen.

+1
I watched zombie movies as a kid but realized that was what they were, just Hollywood movies.
Being an old fart, I really never paid any attention to the zombie thing.
I'd heard about the zombie craze but as I said I never paid any attention to it until several months ago.
I started seeing more and more references to ZOMBIES.
Found out most people have different definitions of what a zombie is.
A politican, people who believe everything they're told, bosses, and a whole list of other people who qualify as zombies, depending on who you talk to.
When I get aggreviated and want to go to the range I tell my wife I'm going zombie hunting.
To me using the zombie thing is a way to have some fun.
Tell someone you're going to buy a gun to shoot zombies with.
Going zombie hunting.
You can tell you're loading you own Zombie ammo.
Hell they even have zombie shoots which are similar to IDPA shoot from what I've seen.
It means different things to different people.I've heard it started as a Internet meme, but I have doubts about that being the main or original source.Whatever the origins it's part of pop culture now, even the history channel did a 2hr show on it this last Halloween(Samhain). For whatever reason it seems to have struk a chord;there are quite a few articles that have tried to explain or analyze it,most seem to push the authors own view or bias.
For myself it's just a fun way to prep."If you're prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse you're prepared for anything" sums it up pretty well. For a lot of people it's nothing more than that.A couple of times a year this forum gets trolled with threads attempting to get people to admit zombies is a code word for minorities, but that's complete bullshit.

Well Debby downer... I will first start with the fact that zombies could indeed be real.
The diseases are out here that cause host organisms to become "zombies" to the parasite.
If this were to be toyed with and weaponized, viola.
Secondly, it's fuckin fun. Who gives a shit about doomsday. WOOHOO!! A virus that no one is
immune to has broken out and there is no way to stop it.. OH LOOK A NUKE!! The entire continent
is now a crater... AH A GIANT ASTEROID! Bang world ends...
Can you clarify what part of these scenarios would be fun?
As for the popularity, it has always been popular. Now that the shit films "Resident Evil" has flooded
the main stream market, all the teeny boppers have jumped on the band wagon it has gotten a lot of
novelty marketing.
I won't even mention the abomination Z day film being Directed and Produced by Brad Pitts.
Bottom line is, we think it would be fun to shoot all the idiot fucks we encounter on a daily basis
and Z day gives us free reign to do so.
Saying that the zombie "thing" has a nerd tinge to it is like saying everyone who owns a AR15 and has
not been in the military is a "poser"
Every "thing" out there has douche bags that are hardcore into it and every "thing" out there has
ridiculous marketing items. Everyone with a "tacticool" rifle that has 10lbs of duplicate and useless shit one it
is no better or cooler than someone buying those "Zmax" bullets.
Also in this economy, a lot of folks are living in their mom's basement.
I would choose my insulting comments a little more wisely.
Zombie preparedness is more of general mindset rather than an actual threat. A Zombie Apocalypse is such an extreme example that has so many different survival elements to it, that it is pretty much the worst case scenario imaginable. So if you're prepared for zombies you are prepared for anything whether it be a financial hardship, to a home invasion, natural disaster, riot, long term power outages, Russian paratroopers, etc. Now some people do get a little carried away and maybe start taking the whole thing a bit too seriously, and I can admit to doing that sometimes. I mean stuff like a blood splattered neon green machete with jagged saw teeth and skulls cut outs in the blade, or a AR-15 mounted chainsaw aren't really practical for anything in a real survival situation. But overall I think it can turn into a fun hobby that for the most part can give you give you the supplies, skills, and mindset to possibly save your life one day. And honestly it helps to have a little light heartedness for preparing for the end of the world. Otherwise, if you are constantly thinking about preparing for when your life goes to shit, it can get just flat out depressing.
And "Zombies" can act as a more politically correct codeword for more likely and realistic bad guys, when talking to people without a similar mindset. If someone asks why you have so many guns and and pallets of ammo and you say, "For when the government becomes to tyrannical and we have to start uprising and killing people

". They're going to look at you like you're fucking insane. But if you say, "For the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse

", they'll probably say something like, "Lol, that's awesome. I should do that too!" or at worst think you're a little immature but harmless. Which leads me to how great I think it this surge in Zombie popularity has become. It can help ease people into preparing and developing a survival mindset, who otherwise wouldn't think of it. Whether it opens their eyes a little bit, or they just think about literal zombies, a good "Zombie Kit" is usually the same thing as a Bug Out Bag. I love what the CDC is doing with their Zombie campaign because it makes preparing for the worst fun and approachable for the average person.
Zombies...

You go ahead and trust the government for your cheese.
I'll trust my preps, training, friends and guns!
If I die, then I know I died fighting! Not by the hands of some government attack dog holding a memo from the head cheese tilted "Collateral Damage"!

All the above are spot on. For me it also gives another good excuse to buy cool toys. My GF was into horror movies but has taken a huge liking to zombies because of me and want to train and prep with me. Now its a "bonding" time with my girl, Zombie movie weekends to catch her up to speed on them, shooting, working on guns, playing in the garden... etc, etc. Or and making cool forts in the living room for zombie movie weekend with the girl!

Bottom Line:
Zombies are used as an unspoken euphemism.

What, you don't believe in zombies?
I just had one came up to me today as I walked out of Walmart, it had its hands out saying: "Change,Change!".
Good thing I can run fast!

Next go to the Glock forum and tell those guy why you buy Kimbers over Glocks!
I would pay to see the sight of your face when SHTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even my kid knows how I feel about Zombies, that they are real, that they are dangerous, and that they are coming. She just doesn't know (something like some of those in Washington) that talking to
them will do no good. She sent me this "T" shirt to try to convince me there is another way other than scattering their brains.
Kids, still have to be taught everything.

This explains all
This explains alllllllllll
If you have to ask "what is all this zombie stuff about".. or say "I don't get it"...You truly don't belong here. probably shouldn't even own a gun.
see my signature below. it pretty much explains the phenomenon.
where do you think most arfcommers fit?
