Gun lube for post shtf!
What will you use to lube and protect your gun with post shtf? Is there any natural lube? Wow this could get off topic fast.
going to be a lot of abandoned cars in the street

Motor oil!

Patrick A. Rodgers talked about different lubes in an old thread. If I remember right, quite a few things can be used as improvised lube, they just burn off or gum up faster.Motor oil was mentioned, and Vagisil(!), among other things.
I've heard that some guys swear by bearing grease,if it really works that well I can't imagine why other types of grease couldn't be used.Only way to be sure would be to go out and start testing. If it really got to be a problem I'll switch to my AK;it still needs lube but is far more forgiving about it.

Motor oil and AT fluid.....
It worked for MG's in Iraq
the blood of my enemies

kill an animal and boil its fat.
Animal fat. That's interesting. I'll have to research that. I don't know how much car oil will be left since I will be using it for fuel in my diesel truck lol!
I have some Lucas gun oil . It looks and smells just like transmission fluid . Transmission fluid has a high burn point aka flash point although I have never tried Transmission fluid on a gun I think it would be ok . There are going to be many abandon cars so for a cleaner just stab a hole in the gas tank with a screwdriver even a car has has been siffled empty still has 1/2 cup of gas which is enough to clean a gun I would also stab the trans pan in the same manner to get the red fluid out .
I just thought about it but I bet the rear ends on big trucks hold a crap ton of gear oil in them?! They are easy to get to also.

Buy it cheap stock it deep.
I still have gallons of RoyCo 634 CLP, I purchased 13 years ago, sitting on the shelf unopened.

+1
Spend 10 bucks a month on it until you feel you have enough.

Even better - go in with a couple of buddies and buy a case of it.
A couple gallons lasts a looooooong time, and it's cheaper to buy it by the gallon than to keep buying those 4oz containers at the store. A case is cheaper still.
in one of the books ive read, it was either a seal or lrrp unit in 'nam said they used wd-40 to clean weapons. ive heard mixed comments on thoughts about it. but i dont know anyone who has actually tried it. 2 of the concerns ive heard people mention was its too slick, and its water based
(rust concern). though dunno how much you would find this in shtf, but i would think there would be a can or two in the majority of households/business that you might venture into if you ran out of everything else.
id try motor oil as well. but that was listed already.
Cat Oil. Good for chapped lips too.

The trouble with WD-40 is that it was never intended to be a lubricant. It was for dispersing water. The name literally stands for Water Displacement and it was the 40th formula developed. So while it will clean halfway well, and get water away from your rust prone parts, it doesn't stick around after the job is done and thus, leaves the surfaces dry and unlubed, and ripe for water to come back to.
I have heard that many rebel fighting forces use salvaged motor oil for their weapon lube needs all the time.

WTF? You do realize animal fat is going to have SALT in it, don't you? salt is NOT a good thing to be rubbing all over the inside of you're gun.....
I'm about to haul a bunch of guns into the middle of nowhere for a camping trip, I'll try some different lubes/oils on blued and parked guns and I'll see which gun fairs the best.

I just pulled some rendered lard out of my cupboard and it says 0 sodium.
YMMV, but it beats the shit out of nothing.

I remember seeing an episode of "dual survival" where Dave did exactly that. He used animal fat to oil up the blade of his knife and on a black powder rifle. Just because I saw it done on TV doesn't mean it's a good idea but at least that guy thought it was worth doing.
As for me I would be using "Ed's red bore cleaner" after the commercially made stuff ran out. 1 part Automatic transmission fluid, 1 part kerosene, 1 part mineral spirits, 1 part acetone. If that wasn't available any old motor oil should do. That's one of the reasons I'm a big fan of the AK-47.

I've got a metric ton of it at work, so I think I know where I'll get it from.
At home I have several different types of lube. Maybe 4 big cans of spray CLP, two small ones, a gallon of liquid, and about a liter each of ballistol and slip 2000.
Post SHTF clean your guns with brake cleaner and save your lube for actual lubrication.
I have used 30 weight motor oil in Iraq on MG's, would want to dilute it for a rifle though.

You can clean with WD40 but it doesn't work as a lube because it evaporates too fast.

Yeah I'd use CLEAN motor oil to lube if I had to.
Used? Between the water and acids that can be found in strained used motor oil, I'll pass.
