NRA's Hunting Rights: Suppressors: Good for the Hearing - Great for Hunting!
Great article by my good friend Darren LaSorte........
When I was growing up in the 1970s, I shot as often as I could and never considered hearing protection. I recall when I was 5 years old, my father and his friend handed me a two-inch .357 Magnum and challenged me to hit a Montana coyote on the far hillside. I launched all five shots and, to the joy of my audience, came remarkably close to ending the coyote's rabbit-munching days. Needless to say, the experience left my ears ringing for a while and I wondered if they would ever return to normal.
We hear the same story from countless hunters and shooters who might not realize that a lack of hearing protection can result in lasting hearing loss––until it's too late. Billions of dollars are spent every year in our healthcare system for hearing loss conditions, such as shooting-related tinnitus. Fortunately, the days of sophisticated electronic hearing protection are upon us. These little battery-powered marvels amplify the good sounds (range commands) while still providing a significant degree of protection. The truth is, however, that even with quality devices like these, shooting can still cause damage to our hearing.
Sound suppressors attached to firearms (less accurately called "silencers" in federal law) are an additional tool available to help protect our hearing and are quickly gaining in popularity throughout the country. Although few may realize it, suppressors are not a new innovation. The Maxim Silencer Company opened its doors more than a century ago. Teddy Roosevelt is reported to have used one on his Winchester Model 94 at his Long Island home in order to avoid disturbing his neighbors while dispatching varmints. However, recent advances in technology and manufacturing capabilities have made them more available and appealing to the shooting masses.
Unfortunately, too many Americans (including some gun owners) still fall victim to the unfair portrayals by Hollywood. Although "silencers" are almost exclusively put in the hands of James Bond or assassins on the silver screen, in reality suppressors are commonly used by hundreds of thousands of law-abiding citizens who appreciate the many benefits of reducing harmful sound. They are virtually never used in the commission of crimes today, and criminal misuse carries severe penalties. The sound-suppressing devices don't make firearms silent but they do help mitigate the otherwise damaging and disturbing noise.

I hear you brother!
Loud and Clear!
I would be able to hear you better if after all the time I spent shooting, I did so with a suppressor!
We are trying through the great folks of the New York State Rife and Pistol Association, I encourage all New York based ARFCMMERS to
join us and help lead the way in our fight for freedoms her....
www.NYSRPA.org
You might just see some familiar names there!
This is one battle that I think we can win and I'm glad the NRA is taking it up.
Put a loud exhaust on your vehicle and get a ticket. Crank the stereo too loud and get complaints or another ticket. But reduce the sound of your firearm without paying a $200 tax and waiting for months and you're looking at jail time. Instead we must wear hearing protection.
It seems like we should be able to get suppressors removed from NFA in the name of safety.
Get 'em Brother Joe.
Mikey needs a can

Thanks brothers.....
Chris Cox and the great folks at ILA are doing a fantastic job with this issue ......we are making sure that our collective voices are heard!
With the use of suppressors....we'll all be able to hear things a little easie!!

This is great to "hear". Suppressors were just made legal here in Michigan and I have my first FORM 4 ready to send in. I just hope the Michigan DNR will step up to the plate on this. If someone is going to poach, then a law that says you can't use a suppressor to take game isn't going to stop them. Just like a rule that says I can't lock my CPL weapon in my car on company property when I come to work is crazy. Like it is some realistic hope that the rule will discourage some psychopath from going on a shooting spree because they are afraid they will loose their job if they get caught having their gun at work. I'm pretty sure the fact you're shooting people will disqualify you from holding that job anymore. Keep up the good work Joe.
Thanks brother....I truly appreciate the kind words....
We have taken a much more visible position on these positions....from participating in the AAC Shoot, to photographs featuring suppressors to our great work in conjunction with 3 Gun Nation and AR15.com in multi-gun competition...to to mentions NRA's new branding: NRA Tactical - our voices are being heard!!
I ran for the board three years ago on that very platform.....Hopefully you will agree we have accomplished something. I look foward to running for re-election early in 2012...to help finish what we all started.
Happy Thanksgiving....
All my best,
Joe
"They are virtually never used in the commission of crimes today, and criminal misuse carries severe penalties."
I am not aware they were ever commonly used in crimes.
Nice job. It would be great if we could just buy suppressors at the gun store. I think the noise is difficult for some new shooters. This would make most people more comfortable.
If you are worried about people shooting people with suppressors ban shooting people...
Suppressors should be no different than a regular firearm.
Fill out a 4473, run the NICS and take it home.

Agree with you 100% my friend!
We've been working hard to make sure that the perceived notion that suppressors are the "devils tools" are shown in a more favorable light. One such way, is to expand their presence afield.
Call, write, email and visit your elected officials and respectfully make your opinion known....

Wish they were legal to hunt with here.
Right now the shooting induced ringing in my left ear is louder than the fan on my computer.
Thank you...This would mean alot. I am thrilled that the NRA is taking this one up and causing folks to have a real discussion about it.
Makes sense too...this is one of the few areas where Europe outstrips the US in that they encourage shooters to use suppressors, just like we encourage shooters to where ear pro.
i'm glad the NRA is taking this up, i may consider going life now, all you need to do now is abolish the hughes amendment like you promised 20 some years goo

Well then.....you have proven what a famous retailer once said, "An educated consumer, is our best customer..."
