Iran-EU can be ideal partners: ex-German leader
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN – Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Saturday stated that Iran and the European Union countries can be ideal partners and that Iran is the most influential country in maintaining peace in the region.

Iran is blessed with natural resources and has a young and educated population, he noted.

Iran can help the European Union diversify its energy suppliers, the visiting former chancellor told the Iranian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

He also said that countries with more regional powers are supposed to take more responsibility in establishing peace in the region.

There is no international challenge that can be met by one single country and it is essential to adopt a multilateral approach to address issues such as energy security, environment, poverty, global warming and proliferation, he added.

Schroeder also said the prospects of developing such a multilateral policy have improved as Barack Obama has taken power in the United States.

He said the new U.S. president is ready to cooperate with the whole world and seeks to formulate his policies based on mutual respect and this is a good opportunity for Iran.

He also said political negotiations guarantee lasting peace in the region and that there needs to be a common approach to resolve problems.
