Hi folks,

Looking for some advice regarding what to look for in a breeder and even if people know of a good breeder in OR or WA. I've heard the slope of the back can be an issue from a health standpoint?

Fiance and I are looking to pick up a GSD pup this summer. We are active people and both work pretty flexible hours, so we know we can commit to a GSD's needs. Just need to know what to be aware of when going to look for our GSD.

We are in the Portland area, BTW.

The 1st question to ask yourselves is do you want a working dog or a pet. Then I recommend visiting a local club with that type of dog and ask the club members who the best local breeders are.

If you find a local breeder, visit them and discuss what type of dog you want. Spend time with their breeding stock and decide whether you like their dogs.

Ask for detailed information regarding any health issues, and for a pedigree which lists any titles and the OFA certification of the dog's hips and elbows.

Will they provide a free puppy should yours develop health problems?

The best breeders tend to be medium sized, with a few breeding males and females producing a litter each per year.

High quality puppies start at 1K dollars and there usually is a waiting list.

Thanks!

Going to follow your advice. I found a breeder than warranties her dogs for 5 years....looks promising...we shall see.
