I have a goldfish that's been around for like 10 years, but recently started swimming upside or just laying around on it's side.
From what I read it has something to do with an air bladder being the problem.
The question is, how long should I wait to see if it fixes itself, or should I just put it out of it's misery?
Could be weakening of the swim bladder due to infection, poisoning or, impacted eggs. The condition is rarely life threatening,
but can be very uncomfortable for you and the fish.

Thanks for the link, I think I've got my answers there.

Impressive.
I'm actually pretty shocked it's lived this long. I normally take the minimalist approach to caring for this fish, so I expected it would die years ago.
It got sick after I actually broke down and cleaned the tank, etc...

probably changed too much water too rapidly or did not give the new water time to dump the chlorine.. assuming you used tap water..
From what I read on the goldfish site, it appears to be an issue with the charcoal filtration. I used a different type setup this time around.
