Today I lost one of my best friends, Kipper

He was a pound rescue and was likely 15 yrs old

My brother first adopted him, but when he moved to Germany, we decided he was not going back so we took him into our house

That was about 10 years ago

He was a fur machine, constantly leaving layers of shed fur all over the place, driving me crazy. Now I would give anything to have hiim back, fur and all

He was very friendly, had a personality all his own.

Today, after I woke up, I heard a crash and him whimpering, I found him on the ground like he had fallen and it looks like he had defecated right there by the doggie door and then proceeded to urinate there

I got him to a vet hospital and they believe he likely had a blood clot or tumor, or both. Could not be certain without surgery and at his age, that could kill him anyways.

I decided he had suffered enough and had him put down. I held him as the drugs took affect, there was no way I wouldn't be there.

Here is a picture of hm when he was younger:

I am sure going to miss him

RIP Kipper!

I m very sorry to hear about your loss. It's very hard to lose a pet. I have had to put three down in the last 5 years.

But I like what you did.
I held him as the drugs took affect, there was no way I wouldn't be there

I did this for all 3 of my dogs. Would not have done it any other way. God bless you.

RIP Kipper

I also have been there for every dog I lived with that was put down. I couldn't imagine having them go off alone, frightened, and without me. Although it hurts like hell, and never gets any easier, I'll be there for the next ones too.

I admire your courage and loyalty to your friend. I'm very sorry for your loss. My most sincere condolences.

HEAVEN'S DOGGY-DOOR
My best friend closed his eyes last night,
As his head was in my hand.
The Doctors said he was in pain,
And it was hard for him to stand.

The thoughts that scurried through my head,
As I cradled him in my arms.
Were of his younger, puppy years,
And OH...his many charms.

Today, there was no gentle nudge
With an intense "I love you gaze",
Only a heart thats filled with tears
Remembering our joy filled days.

But an Angel just appeared to me,
And he said, "You should cry no more,
GOD also loves our canine friends,
HE's installed a 'doggy-door"!

Thanks everyone, I am slowly getting used to him not being around.

I am planning to get another best friend from the local doggy pound, just not sure I am ready yet.

I really hate seeing these threads. Sorry OP. Sucks every time.

My pooch is coming up on nine years old. I find myself thinking about it almost every day. My last dog, I held him while they put him down. Besides having to bury my parents, putting my last dog down was the third worst day of my life. Some people just don't get it. You have to be a dog person to know or most any pet owner.

I agree, only people who view their pets as members of the family I think can only fully understand the pain. It is just like if it were a child or parent.
