There are lots of posts about "What's the best dog for xxxxx."

My question: What's the best dog if you are a couch potato?

It doesn't matter as long as it's a shelter dog.

If you are dedicated to sitting on your behind, putting yourself first, no pet is your best option.

Even the oldest, slowest, most lethargic dog still needs daily exercise, house training, obedience lessons, baths on a regular basis, brushing, maintenance like trimming nails and cleaning ears, cleaning up feces from the yard every day and so on.

No foolin'.

I accept all the above (or will, when I can get a dog). I just can't do justice to a dog who needs a 5-mile run every day.

A senior dog sounds like an interesting idea. And of course a pound pooch, I don't need a breed.

Hard to go wrong with a Neo if you want lazy. The real question is whether or not you can put up with everything else about them.

Probably a smaller dog, shorter walks and less intense exercise... unless its a Jack Russell Terrier

There you go.

My shelter rescue is (we think) Rottie, GSD, and something else. The lazy bum doesn't care what we do, as long as he's with us. His favorite place when we're on the computer is right below our chairs, snoozing away.

Adopt a great dane. They are the ultimate couch potato dogs. If you get one older than 3 yrs old, the only thing it will do is sleep.

You know, I just might go with a cat... Smaller mouth to feed.

Just get a Maine Coon and call it a day.

This for sure!
Wife and I adopded a 2 yr old female Dane. Although she loves to run and play, she mostly sleeps. She is a huge couch potato who longs to be a lap dog.

First post winner!

Since you know your lifestyle picking a pet is easier. I would suggest a shelter that has a Labrador Retriver over the age of five in any color. There are so many people that give up on pets the shelters are full.

Labradors are great dogs.

You might want to look into greyhounds or whippets. I was looking into adopting one and seem to remember they had a rep for being pretty laid back dogs.

Whippets? WHIPPETS??? They are very, very high-energy dogs. My sister had some. They can be OK or they can be pretty high-strung. Maybe when they get older they are OK (my sister's were that way) but as young dogs they are pretty wild animals.

She had to drug them with Dramamine when she took a long drive. It was funny watching these usually wild dogs, strung out and mellow.

Everything I've read indicated they need a chance to run once a day or a short walk. I know my friend's retired racing greyhound didn't do a damn thing until we let it outside and it saw a rabbit.

If a dog that needs 30 minutes of exercise a day is too much for you, get a cat.

MASTIFF!! They go when you go. Sleep when you sleep. Our former Bull Mastiff was always ready if I wanted to walk, hike, patrol, etc. But only when I needed him to. Other than on demand work he pprefered to guard the sofa. They like the most comfortable spot in the house btw. And will cuddle endlessly. Hope your search for the right "couch potato" goes well. Good Luck!
