Box turtle laying eggs...
OK, while it's not exactly a pet of mine, it's still pretty cool...
A few hours ago my dogs started going nuts on the deck. Looking to see what they were barking at, I could see a boxy about 15 feet away on the side of my hill.
Over time, it criss-crossed back and forth...probably covering about a 20 foot square area.
She finally stopped and started digging, then wiggling her ass over the hole....surely she's laying eggs!
Gonna have to build an enclosure around her nest so I can protect the babies.
Will there be pics? While fishing a few days ago I found a baby snapper about the size of my palm out in the middle of the lake. I assumed it was dead because it wasn't swimming and had it's head and limbs retracted. I scooped him up with my paddle and he was alive and kicking. Snapped a couple pics and set him free.
Get Some!
ETA, here's a might young one (note pine needles for scale)...

I found a young one last fall that was only a day or two old. Turned it over to a friend who does turtle rescue and she raised it to the point that we're releasing it back to the wild today! I will get pics!
Pics op!! I love turtles. Never seen a baby box turtle, only adults.
This is the box turtle I'm releasing today. She's one, maybe two days old in this picture and about the size of a quarter.
I'll post a picture of her now when I see her today.
Here's the baby boxy from my previous post about to be released. Fomr October to now, it's grown about the size of a silver dollar. It also has changed from being green to brown.
Released!
Cute little thing. Thanks for sharing the picts.
It's turtle season here In Sea Isle City. I spend more time pulling over and taking them to the other side of the road (the direction they were heading) than I would like to admit. Although, it pisses me off even more to see a dead one in the street.
Last year I took over 30 viable eggs to the Wetlands Insitiute from road kill. Hopefully this year it will be less.
What the heck. Not egg laying pics, but here's a couple I've run up on out in the woods that have a little character to them:
Some kind of a story here!
I like to call this one Lefty
THIS guy I caught with half a lizard hanging out of his mouth. Live lizard. By the time I got my camera out he had dropped it and was hauling ass. I've never seen a box turtle move as fast as this guy. I had to jog to keep up.
And this one WAS laying eggs. Right in the middle of a woods road. Not the best spot.
