Of Mice and Men
I had some free time today so I read the book. I really enjoy it. I thought it was very well written and I felt drawn to the characters; however, I have read other similar or better books that are not so well-known. Why is a big deal made about Of Mice and Men? Why is it required reading in many schools?

Was there a movie made or am I missing some Forrest Gump joke?
I think of Mice and Men was pretty much discovered after The Grapes of Wrath hit it big. Grapes of Wrath has few equals in terms of capturing that time and place in American history.
I think it's a piggy back off of Grapes of Wrath... although I liked Of Mice and Men better. (The new legs thing was a reference to the movie / actor...poor, I know.

Sinese played the main character in a movie version of Of Mice and Men.

I have not read that one yet, but will add it to my Amazon list.
Steinbeck did some really great writing. One of my favorites from the era, I've read all of his novels.
He also did some really good writing as a war correspondent during WW2 as well which you can find without too much trouble if you dig about a bit.
I've read a few of his books, thought that East of Eden was better than Grapes. Of Mice and Men was also excellent. I think the reason it is held in such high regard is that it was the first good book to show the plight if that generation.

East of Eden was much better than the Grapes of Wrath. Steinbeck is an amazing author. I've read all his works. If you are looking for a not too in depth read from him that is quite enjoyable I'd recommend Travels with Charley.
Basic story of a man and his dog. Can't get much simpler.
it's a pretty good read; there was flick with robert blake and randy quaid as george & lenny
and an older version with iirrc lou costello as george; I can't remember who played lenny

Of Mice and Men is deeply allegorical.
Lenny: Man before his fall from Grace.
George: Man after his fall from Grace.
Curley: Satan.
Curley's wife: Eve (or temptation).
Slim: Jesus.
The Boss: God.
The ranch where they are working is Earth; the farm that they want to buy is Eden, which of course they can never get. Steinbeck's next book was East of Eden; most of his work is deeply Christian.
