Looking for a good western
Gun fights, bar fights, double crossings, good guys and bad guys. Anyone have a good fictional suggestion? Thanks.
The movie is well known as "The Outlaw Josey Wales" but, Forrest Carter's "Gone to Texas" is a very cool read. Offers a bit more meat than the movie.

Blood Meridian by Cormac Mccarthy. It's dark and brutal. Some unforgettable characters. Not a traditional western.
Thanks for the replies so far, I'll check them both out. A series of books that follows the same character would be neat also.
Look at some of the westerns by William Johnstone or JA Johnstone. William did several horor books as well as action adventure series e.g. Out of the Ashes as well as westerns. I'm still reading the last mountain man series.

I read a book called "The Last of the Apaches" some years ago, can't even remember the name of the author. Enjoyed it tremendously.
Flint by Louis L'Amour is probably the best western book I have ever read, definately the best of all Louis L'Amour's books. Oldie but a goodie.
Most have probably already read the book but...
Lonesome Dove one of the best westerns ever (book and movie)
"True Grit" is another great book if you can find a copy. More detail than the movie.
+1 !!! Anything by Cormac Mcarthy is pretty much the shit. Most of it is pretty cowboy-centric, or at least has ties to the southwest/south. One of the most essential authors of our time(in my opinion)
I ordered Blood Meridian by Cormac Mccarthy on Friday and added Lonesome Dove and Flint to my wish list on Amazon. Thanks everyone.
most anything by louis L'amour
