I just picked up my first American Fender, first guitar really. I didn't get the amp yet however. The below link is from sweetwater, it's their black friday sale. My question is, can I use this as my amp or is this more of an add-on amp(connecting to another amp)??? I ask because it seems like such a great price,

Sweetwater amp

Thanks!

That is the power amp that sits atop a stack such as a Marshall stack.

You do need a speaker cab to go with that head. I have to say, however, I love Marshall but can't stand the MG series. It's solid state and not one of the better sound solid state amps. Look at some combo amps (the will have a speaker with them) like Vox, Peavey, Bugera, ect.

An amp head for your first amp? Look at something like this first, it won't be a great gigging amp, but it will be awesome for home use: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HT1R/

Besides, the MG series Marshall amps are a love it or hate it amp, personally I don't care for them.

MGs Suck

As for the tube blackstar... not sure id get a tube amp as my first amp. Alot that can go wrong with them. Crate is a good way to go, and so is Line 6. they are essentially bulletproof. nothing dainty about them like with tube amps.

A lot can go wrong? Like what?

A lot can go "wrong" with tube amp such as tubes dying due to age or an improper impedance match between the output of the amp and the input to the cabinet (solid state amps "can" be a bit more forgiving.) None the less, I think that the Blackstar is a great choice.

I personally use one a Fender Super Champ XD at home. On it's own it sounds great. Two switchable channels with effects along with tubes. Connected to a cabinet (I use a 2x12 at home for a thicker tone and a 4x12 with the band) this little 15 watt amp roars. The 2 channels and effects can be foot switch controlled as well (separate fender part for $30+...or you can easily build one with parts from Radio Shack for less than $20 and 15 minutes). It is a quasi modelling amp due to its use of COSM effects and how it kind of "reconfigures" itself for different gain/distortion channel selections.

Congrats on the new guitar though!

No reason to avoid a tube amp. It takes no time at all to change tubes out. Yes they are an added cost but the cost is reasonable and the frequency they need to be changed is minimal.
Improper impedance match? All you gotta do is look at the back of the amp or read the manual one time. It's not like you're going to be switching cabs every other day.

You're right on all accounts. I was just throwing out the typical thoughts on the topic. For a new guitarist with only one rig, not much is going to change from day to day. In the end, I would recommend a tube amp over a solid state of the same wattage for anyone.

I had a small MG and I would agree. I was not impressed with it. It was like a poor man's Marshall Amp. It is nothing like a real tube Marshall. For the money there are much better solid state or digital modeling amps out there to start off with.
