Need aome advice/opinions about guitar refinishing.
I recently picked up an Ibanez VBT700 (I'll post pics later today). Whoever built the guitar didn't do the best job with the binding. It's a little uneven & even one of the cuts for one of the wings is a little uneven.
So I'm thinking about making it my guinea pig & using it for my first refinishing project (not sure if I want to, yet). And if I do this, I want to get rid of the paint (replace it with a lighter finish that let's the wood breathe a little better), fix the binding & even out that cut. And if I'm feeling ambitious, add a maple top (there appears to be enough room to fit one on the top without shaving it down, since the fretboard sits so high above the body).
So I guess the biggest problem I see at the moment is, what's the best way to strip the paint?

I can't tell if it came out in this pic, but this is one of the spots where the paint line is uneven on the binding.

I once stripped a Mexican Tele body of polyurethane using oven cleaner and MEK. The poly was laid on thick, at least 1/16" of an inch. It took several applications of oven cleaner to completely strip it. The MEK was used to clean the wood. I doubt the Ibanez is finished that poorly though.
It doesn't come through in the pic, but the binding job is a little shoddy. from a distance it looks fine, bit if you look at it in person, you see the problems.
And I know it's not functional, but it bugs me. Nicks & wear on a guitar's finish doesn't bother me, but for something reason this does. Go figure.

Everybody must think I'm nuts or something.

Hell, it's a used, non-classic, guitar. Have some fun with it!
I am looking at the Stewmac site considering the same thing. Have a strat body that needs paint. Considering doing the job myself with some aerosol products. Worst case is that I sand it back down and have a pro do it. For the 30-40 bucks to try it as a experiment I don't think I have anything to lose.
Cool. Let us know how it turns out. I went back to driving truck since I first posted this, so it's on the back burner, along with some other projects.
Honestly,If it were me I'd leave it alone. They don't make that model anymore, who knows in 10 years It might be worth a pretty penny.
Check out the guitar re-ranch for supplies, they have good finishes in rattle cans. I have done two guitars whith their supplies and they came out well.
