Okay, so first guitar....
I'm looking at getting my first guitar. However, I'm not some tone deaf 13 year old so I need good sound/quality for $400-ish. Thanks to the "what to look for" thread tacked at the top, I've pretty much (not definately) settled on a Strat type. So far, the guitars I'm considering are a Fender FSR standard HSS, a Jackson JS23 Dinky, or a Epiphone SG400. Now, that being said I am a music teacher and qualify for a (potential) 20% discount at any Music and Arts store. Thoughts?
The difference in the neck profile of these is dramatic.. Try to pick up and feel each one for a few mins.. I prefer a thicker, fuller neck. The dinky has a thin neck profile front to back and has a slightly wider nut and string spacing. Which some prefer.
As far as sound quality it depends on what style and type of music you wanna play. The amplifier you chose plays a large roll in the (Tone) sound you will get.
Buy as nice of a guitar as you can afford. The cheaper $200.00-400.00 guitars loose a lot of their value at purchase. The higher end ones retain most of their value if you decide you don't wanna learn to play..
A good guitar is like your best pair of shoes.
I will be more than happy to answer any of your questions.
I worked at a guitar store for a few years and have built dozens of custom guitars.
of that selection i'd go with the epi. most people (not assuming you're like them) will play for a while then for no reason at all never play them again. and if you have an epi (for starts) its no real big loss. personally though I started out with an Epi DR100 (acoustic) then I bought my bass Ibanez Soundgear 5 string. then all of my other guitars followed. but yeah. the DR100 only ran me about $250 w/ case and humidifier. held me over until I was certain that I was going to use it a lot. plus for the price I've found Epiphone usually has the best sound for being inexpensive. and I'd suggest buying through a big distributor with on-site techs i.e. guitar center.
Fender Classic Player '60s Stratocaster....Mexican made but designed by the Fender Custom Shop. Seriously great bang for your buck axe. Check youtube for countless rave reviews.
Probably closer to $600 but your discount could ballpark it or check Ebay or CL for a used one.
No one's even asked what kind of music you're looking to play. That can definitely narrow choices a bit, but most guitars are capable of working across many genres. Just saying that it's worth taking note of while giving suggestions.

I think I did in my original post???
Indeed you did

I guess we're just waiting to hear back then.
You should be able to find MIM Strats in the $300 all day long. I found mine for $300 last year. I waded through quite a few of them to find the one I wanted. CL is your friend.
48th Street Fender Strat (MIM)
Here is a link to the guitar I found by shopping around. Plays amazing well. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was in my hands.
I'm not (nor will be) in a band. This is just for personal pleasure. However my school just applied for a grant from Fender. If we get it ill have 50 guitars coming so ill be teaching guitar to my middle school. I will mainly be playing (or trying to) a little bit of everything.

Martin acoustic until your fingers toughen up and then a '52 re-issue Telecaster....it will do anything you need it to do.
The Mexican strats are good guitars for the money
, especially used. Another good bet would b a prs Se. on the used market
I found a "package" deal on my local Craigslist, and I'm not sure if it's a good deal, "meh", or "F-it". It's a "Gibson SG Gothic guitar, a Gibson SG Hardshell Case, and a Line 6 Spider II 75W 1x12" Amp - with all the trimmings including a 10' cable, guitar strap, "The Gig Bag Book of Guitar Complete", and a four channel foot peddle." "Only played twice...moving sale". They're asking $1500-OBO.
Thoughts?

Way High, Amp is $100 bucks at a pawn shop. Gibson Guitar as little as $700 mail order.
if you like the Gibson style get a Epiphone and Marshall amp.
Fender style get a Mex.Strat. better made than US models.

If I had $1500 bucks, I'd have a nicer set up than that. You can get a used SG Standard and a used Marshal DSL for that amount.
I lean towards Jacksons because I like the way they feel. And that's about half the battle when picking out a guitar. Do you like the way the neck feels & other ergonomics fall into place?
The other half is the tone, but a lot of that can be changed with pickups, amps & stompboxes. Although, you should make sure that the guitar is reasonably audible without plugging it in. No, it won't be as loud as an acoustic, but you should be able to hear it.
I'd try out the Fender & Jackson you're looking at & decide which you like the feel of better. The tone should be similar as far as the wood is concerned because they both have Alder bodies & Maple necks. Then if you want to tweak the tone a little bit, just swap out a pickup or two.
And as far as a decent little modeling amp goes, I really like the Peavey Vypyr 30.

Haven't played on the Peavey. What I settled on were a VOX DA5 and VOX DA10. They have very good tone for what they are and can run on batteries. I also stuck an 8" Weber speaker in my DA5 which help the low end quite a bit.
You can pick them up for $50-$85 on CR too.

I have a Vypyr 15 & I like it, but a few months ago I goofed off with a 30 & a 75, and came to the conclusion that the 30 is just right. It has more effects than the 15 & can use the footswitch (unlike the 15), and of the 3 the amp models sound the best on the 30.

I'm sorry... This just simply isn't true. The MIM Standards are indeed fine guitars compared to many others - but they simply do not compare to the MIA versions.
Play as many guitars as you can before buying. Each of those guitars you named off are very different from another.

Buy once, cry once. Get a quality guitar. Middle of the road is just that.
If you dump all of your funds into a guitar (plus some more cash on top) you can always pick up a cheap 10" practice amp for less than $100 all day long on Craigslist. Once you learn your way around the guitar, you can start worrying about your tone - hold off on a nice amp until then.

Sorry, But I'd go for the Good Amp first.

I have to agree with DangerJ on this. I know from experience that a quality guitar sounds worlds better, no matter what amp you're playing through.
And yes, I do agree that good amps do make a difference, but if you're playing a crappy guitar through a Marshall stack, its still gonna sound like crap.

Well, the wifey (also a music teacher) gave me the OK to "get both" (acoustic....she wants me to try to learn the Bach Lute Suites, and electric) . That being said, I thought I recall seeing last week some big internet retailer had a "buy $xxx worth of guitar stuff and get a free acoustic" type deal...I can't remember who though. Anyone know?
I don't know. But Acoustic guitars come in various levels of quality, just like anything else.

I have to agree on the Mexican strats. I just sold my 1999 American strat to buy a new MIM that was nicer; in fact it was the black FSR Standard HSS at GC. But... I was in a store the other day and I played a Squier Classic Vibe strat that was better than every other strat in the store.....Mexican or American! I think it was about $350. I am DONE with American made Fenders.
Well, I just got my Yamaha FG730S acoustic yesterday. After about an hour yesterday and a couple hours today, my fingers hurt like a bitch

. Now, a question or two...
Now, I'm not some sausage fingered food blister, so how the blue hell do you fit all your fingers for some chords, namely Amaj? I can't seem to get three fingers all "in there".
Bar the Amaj, i.e., use your pointer or middle finger across all three strings. That's one way. You can also put the three fingers at an angle. Another is to form a triangle with three fingers either your 1st, 2nd or 3rd or 2nd 3rd and 4th. The finger in the middle plays the D string, first finger in the series plays the G string behind the other two fingers, then the smallest finger plays the B string.
Just move things around until everything fits and you get a good sound. No matter what anyone tells you, there aren't any hard and fast rules. You have to find what works for you and what sounds good.
ETA: Check out some of this guy's videos. They're pretty helpful
http://www.justinguitar.com/index.php
Yep, what Some Beach said. Just mess around with it until you figure out what works best for any given chord. Everybody's different.

So, my finger tips are sore/numb. Guess I'm building up callouses. I don't really get a set regular practice time (it depends on my teaching schedule. Tomorrow I should be able to get at least an hour uninterrupted). Anyway, I guess Im doing OK. I've been using some of the free shit from David Taub's "next level guitar" and garage band's chord trainer. I've been slowly plunking out Green Day's "Good Riddance" (yeah I know Green Day eats dicks, but it's a nice tune and it's easy to learn).
Now, here's my conundrum. What's a good book(s) to learn from that's NOT tab? I'm a former (

) pro musician and to me, tab seems like a million steps in the wrong direction. I already know how to read the hell out of music, I just need help applying to guitar. What do y'all think? I've also asked my old college roomie (Keith Calmes) what he thinks too. I'll be interested to hear what you and he say.
Well, I guess if you can sight read sheet music, the next thing to do is just memorize where the notes are on the fretboard. And it's quite simple. In standard tuning you have, from low to high, E A D G B E, and you have every whole, sharp, & flat note all the way up & down. And the 12th fret is the octave of that string's respective open note.
Not a whole lot different than a piano, when you think about it.
And I do envy you, being able to sight read is something I have yet to figure out. I tried & tried back when I was a kid in school, but for some reason, it never stuck in my head. I guess it was too much like math (I was a lousy math student, lol).
ETA: And of you go to a guitar shop/music store & buy an actual tab book, most (if not all) have normal sheet music along with tablature. You'll have a 6 line staff with the tab & a normal staff & notes corresponding to the tab above or below it.
Guitar World Magazine also has 4 or 5 songs in both tab & normal notation in a similar fashion, every month. http://www.guitarworld.com

Get this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Rock-Blues-Guitar-Book/dp/1580628834/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320811579&sr=8-1
It is a good book for beginners and all of the tab has standard notation above it. The author does a great good explaining everything in simple terms and it is well organized. I feel it is one of the best do it yourself books out right now.
