Here are some pics of our new hangar door.

I took these for our local bullshit thread, but figured you guys might get a kick out of them.

One of the reasons I haven't been able to shoot with you guys or go out and chase tail or do anything that is fun and costs money:

The first pictures are how it shipped. I just unfolded it to make it full height. I didn't get any pics of me unfolding it or lifting it into place. The door is 18' x 60' and weighed about 5800 lbs. We have it semi-installed and operational, but the door company sent me hoses that are too short for final installation. I should have it sheeted and finished in a week or two.

Yes. It's a Hi-Fold single piece hydraulic door. They call it the No-Fold.

That is so cool. I am exceptionally jealous. Wish I had more room to work on my ultralight than the 2 car garage.

What good is the door if the front is all open? The wind and weather are going to blow right through those holes.

If the door makes you jealous you better hold on to something. We could probably find some room for your house, garage and ultralight over here.

I think I remember your thread from when you bought that place, did you end up opening a flightschool too? Are you still looking at making it into an airpark?

The flight school is sort of running. We don't have a proper office yet, but I do have two fixed wing students and my boss has two helicopter students. We don't finance anything so we are very slow. The office is next on our list after completing the hangar door. Ironically, even though we have one of the largest privately owned airports in the world we have been making most of our money from helicopter maintenance and instruction. We are a Robinson Helicopter authorized service center.

The airpark is our long term goal. We would like to lean more towards a business park than your standard fly in community, but wouldn't mind some houses as well. I would really like to get involved with the space tourism industry, but when we are competing with entities like the State of New Mexico, it makes it hard.

Just to be clear, I don't own the airport my boss does.

Here is a little info on our airport. It's the second one up from the bottom.

Cool, best of luck to you all! Its a long ol haul down there in the flying lawnmower I fly, but Id love to land there someday. I bet I could do 3 full stop landings for currency without making a turn.

That is looking like a nice setup. Is that a hydra-swing door? We put one of those on a hangar I helped a student of mine build and I love them. That design seems far superior to the cable driven clam shell type.

Nice...
Looks like the minimum cross country cruise altitude is about 50 feet.
Where did you hide all the hills and buildings?

We designed the hangar for a HydroSwing, but they went tits up. The core employees started a company named ICON, which makes a door identical to the Hydroswing. We went round and round trying to decide between that, the Schwiess hydraulic, and this Hi-fold.

We settled on the Hi-fold mainly for it's sensing package, which keeps both cylinders aligned as well as stops if the door hits something. Other selling points were the momentary contact controls (the only one of the three that you don't have to hold the "open" button throughout the opening process) and it is quiet.

Converting a former UPT aux field for private/commercial use sounds like a great idea. They definitely start out as large, well maintained runways (and UPT students sure appreciate them!)

Well, this is more the area. I really wish I had some pictures from airborne, but I'm usually too busy clipping in and hanging on when I'm aboard.

Very. Fucking. Nice. OP.

Seriously, living the dream. I'm jealous.

One question: Where the hell are all the trees? What god-forsaken part of Texas doesn't have a tree for miles and miles in any direction? It looks like Mars.

It cant be a proper airport unless it has a 50ft obstacle somewhere.

We have 520 acres. When we moved in there were 4 trees. We planted 56.

I grew up in Southwest MN, just south of Marshall.

Yup, your not going to hear the tower say "caution mechanical turbulence" there. Looks good OP.

That's true, but I have heard them give advisories for dust devils a few times.
