Heard about this last night. All 6 on board confirmed dead. Sad sad deal.

Security camera footage of the crash. Just didn't have the altitude. Seemed to be straight and level.

Same reason that C-130 turned into the mountains after departing Jackson Hole in the 90s and countless other CFITs, they lose awareness is my guess.

very sad...

last words on the CVR (yeah I know this aircraft doesn't have one) = "Wow..I wonder why all the city lights dissapeared"

I live about 10 miles from the crash site. No normal reason for this to happen. His rad alt should have warned him and EVERYONE that flys out here knows that we have mountains! The twin commander 690 is a good airplane. 99% this was pilot error! Stupid and sad!

One of my best friends was in that C-130 in Jackson Hole. That whole "accident" just pisses me off. If anyone has flown into or out of Jackson Hole you know how hard it is to miss the big fucking signs that say Climb to 10000 feet before making any turns. WTF. An entire crew of experienced people missed those signs and all the other warnings. I walked the crash site a year after the crash and it was not a good place to be, though I did find a fly tying booklet and a fly that the Secret Service agent on the flight had in his effects. I gave them to the man's son who was also a Secret Service agent.

Seems to me (as a flatlander) that it would be wise to fly the SID (or at least take cues from it), and fly airways when flying in mountainous terrain?

Trouble-Ts are important, even if you have a good climb gradient.

My guess is he was trying to stay out of class b airspace. Stayed low to skirt the system and SPLAT!
