Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 is ...
A complete festering pile of dog crap.
http://www.cigaraficionado.com/cigars/top25detail/year/2011/rank/1
Last Year's #1, the Cohiba Behike, doesn't even make the list. Just one example. Discuss.
Usual Drivel... Big marketing "special" releases and regular production Cubans
Seems the Nicaraguan tobacco had a good year.
I should add that I only have had #'s 21, 23, 24(but not the Torpedo). So nothing that high on the list... I'd smoke another of 21 and 23.
I've had quite a few of those and only enjoy two of them, #5 and #8.
ETA: Nicaragua always has a good year, IMHO. Over the years I've been to the Dom Rep, smoked hundreds of Cubans and I prefer Padron's Nicaraguan tobacco.
I've had a couple that are on that list. I have one of the '64 Padrons in my humidor and I have had countless Olivia V's. Those are a great smoke and I have never had a bad one.
I am looking forward to a few Mi Amors that I picked up on cbid.
The one thing I dont get about Cigar Aficianado is why do they mention so many cuban cigars? I cant get them unless I travel to Canada and even then, every smoke shop knows that the tourists from Washington are coming up and will pay OBSCENE prices just to say they have a "cuban" cigar. As a matter of fact I would say that about 95% of their readers cant get ahold of a cuban smoke.

I guess they have subscribers all over the world, but it does tick me off looking at that forbidden fruit :)

It's whoever pays them the most in advertising for the year. CA is a joke.

That is just so unfair.
They are impartial and don't let advertising sway their decisions.
You all know that you want that Bradley.....I know I would trade this Padron for it so quickly....
Then again.....

So as someone who is trying to find a stable of cigars he likes..... I should avoid that list as reference?

No....try them all...take notes and report back.

I am a big fan of Padrons. And generally disappointed in most other cigars except for Cohiba Siglos.
All of those are worth a try but there are better available to make the top 25.
except maybe that warlock. I had one & it left no impression. meh.

so if I were a big brand cigar maker and I had somebody who made a "you need to buy this brand because we say so" list
and I knew just because my name was on that list I would see 10-20% increase in profits
I would never ohh I dont know possibly sway that maker of that list my way...
ohh this reminds me I need to be a list maker...I hear the perks of the job are really really good
I have had 2 of the top 5, 4 of the top 15 (including the earlier 2) and 5 of the top 25. I like La Aroma de Cuba and Padron 1964's. Everything else is a mystery to me.
There are definitely some good cigars in there but they definitely make me scratch my head as part of the top 25.
I was going to subscribe to CA. After that list I will save the $20 a year and buy a Padron. Just another magazine with a BS top whatever list based on who pays them the most.
Meh. Cigars, like food or alcohol is HIGHLY subjective, and everyone tastes things differently, has different likes/dislike, etc. Just read any thread here, or on other cigar forums discussing what the "best", "favorite", or any specific cigar, and you will see there tends to be very little agreement. I buy what I like, and taste as many different cigars as I can, and keep careful notes so I can recall what I liked, what I didn't, and find trends to help with future purchases.
I subscribe to CA as well as Cigar Journal (based in Germany, mainly geared to Cubans and European cigars and tastes/subjects), and read them purely for entertainment. I will say, the most recent Cigar journal had a few "top" lists in the last issue, and there are a fair number that match with CA, some i'm inclined to think that they are just fairly popular and well liked cigars, versus there being and "corruption" in the writing/ratings.
Buy what you like, enjoy he lists and articles for entertainment, and make you own decisions based on your own notes, experiances, and preferences. What you like, wont be what I like, or what some others like. Just the way it is with things that are based on something as individually subjective as taste and smell.

I don't see too much of a problem. On the other hand though, I'm not one to regularly come into possession of ISOMs anyway. For me that's just a list of things I should try, and besides that, there were quite a few brand names on there that I enjoy to begin with, like padron, rocky patel, and La flor dominicana.

Next you'll be telling us that gun magazines are like that too.I will not hear the morals of advertiser-funded glossy magazines spoken of in such a slanderous way, sir!

Because it's LAST years #1. I've rarely seen the same cigar two years in a row on that list.
I've had some of those cigars although not the same year of production. Some of them are very good. Some, meh.
I've never thought much of the La Aroma line, but that's just me. Maybe it's Pepin burnout.
I don't think I'd have gone with the AB Prensado over the P2 myself, but everyone's different.
Hell If I could afford more than one of the Padron 1964s I might just reconsider the P2.

If you know how/when to look, you can subscribe to CA for about $9 a year or so.
Makes for good "library" material.

Did one of those lists have Casa Manga at #5? Instantly lost all credibility with me.

Yep. More reason why everything but joe with a website reviewing cigars is pretty rubbish.
I still think the best benchmark for reviews are forums like this one. Watch the 'what are you smoking' thread to see what people enjoy.
