 Show Idea

I think a show on C&R guns would be interesting. There are some very nice old guns that you can get for a relatively low price. Ammo is dirt cheap (and dirty). But, they can be great fun. Nothing like holding a Mosin Nagant 91/30 and thinking about some poor Russian that had to lug that thing around.

At the same time, a discussion of the ethics of sporterizing said arms would be important.

(Edited to correct apalling grammar.)

Not a bad idea. But what are the ethics of sporterizing?

Well, most collectors view it as destroying a historical artifact. When you alter a C&R rifle, you're forever ruining it's historical value. When a collector find a firearm that has been sporterized, they refer to is as being "bubba-fide". It would be like taking a '62 'Vette and giving it ground effects neon lights, low profile tires, putting big subwoofers in the rear, painting it neon green with graphics and putting a Japanese Import 4 cylinder under the hood. It's still a 'Vette, but it's darn ugly. It's ruined.

On the other hand, the M44 carbine makes a nice scout type rifle with an ATI stock and a scope mount that fits in the rear sight base.

(ETA Does this count as carrying on a conversation with Jim Scouten? )

This IS a conversation.

And what you explain makes perfect sense. I can't tell you how many time I get asked about "refinishing - restoring" an old firearm. The answer, unlike for Vintage Corvettes, is don't do it! Or you'll kill the collector value.

Ethics of sporterizing. Well done.

I Hold with the traditionalists... don't screw up history with your new stock.

I'm a tradionalists also. I'm a history teacher and I feel you can learn a lot about history through studying firearms and firearm technology. My high school history teacher brought in guns and bayonets to illustrate the development of weapons of war leading up to and during WWI. It was the same year as Columbine, so that option is out the door nowadays, even in rural Ohio.

I don't know that much about C&R guns. I know there are some good guns for good prices that some people overlook because they're not shiney and new. Also, I just get tired of seeing the same old stuff about ARs and Glocks all the time and think something different would be nice. There are some great C&R guns out there. I know quite a few people carry Makarovs for CCW.

C&R would be good...in fact a C&R corner for a season or so highlighting various C&R's would be kind of neat.

How about supressors...or do you think it's better to be quiet and keep it off the radar screen? Same with MG's.... I always amaze people when I tell them MG's and silencers are legal...just get the sheriff in a signing mood and write a big check to the IRS. I'd like to see some comparisons from time to time on various models...say .223/5.56 comparison...then swap off to a .22-250 and measure db supression...then maybe put one on a .22 hornet for fun. Same with .308 models...put one on a 300 WSSM, etc. Then there is the entire world of the really quiet 22 LR's.

Thanks,
Ken

+1 on the C&R show!

espessially the Garand and Carbine.

I have a Correct grade Garand from the CMP, it's a work of beauty. Looking to buy one of their carbines they'll be selling soon.

While I'm on it, heck, what about a show on the CMP?

Probably need to tie that into Camp Perry coverage of the DCM matches.

(You do know the CMP is warehoused at Camp Perry, right)

Their north store is located there, I believe their main headquarters is in Anniston AL.

By the way Jim, about what time of year are the national match episodes on?

I cannot believe you guys didnt think of the "OTHER" option...

The ARFCOM Option... Get Both... get two... One to keep it's historic value and one to 'customize'

Ask me how I know

And with all of those M1 Carbines from CMP about to hit the market....it may be a good time to explain to everyone the conditions of purchasing from the CMP on Shooting USA. Orders for Inland carbines can be received on or after April 30th (though probably not with a bolt)!

Proof of marksmanship and membership in a CMP affiliated organization (gun club) with a notary's stamp and the cashola will get a gun shipped to your house(http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/eligibility_requirements.htm)....just like in the old days.

Don't forget this year is the 100th anniversary of the National Matches being held at Camp Perry.

And the 10th annual John C. Garand Match as well

We noticed that.

Seems like a good enough reason for a history piece, wouldn't you think?
