This week on Shooting USA

We’ve got run-and-gun action from Las Vegas as the USPSA hosts the championships in the Three Gun Nationals. It’s Tactical Competition with Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun with new rules that now challenge the competitors to shoot multiple guns on each stage of fire.

Plus Bill Davison continues his Pro Tips series of Precision Rifle Shooting. This week he’s getting your scope set up right.

And Jerry Miculek will be with us, not only shooting Three Gun Competition, but also demonstrating his skill with a S&W Magnum Revolver.

It’s all on The Outdoor Channel, following American Rifleman TV.

Saturday Night: 10:00PM Eastern, 9:00PM Central, 8:00PM Mountain, 7:00PM Pacific

I want to call your attention to the featured product review on the home page of www.ShootingUSA.com Henry Rifles has introduced a collection of modern day family heirlooms with their engraved rifles in .44 Magnum and in three rimfire calibers. These will look good in the field and look even better hung over the mantle in your rec room. Check it out.

And I’ve had a steady stream of messages this week from folks who have been getting connected to receive The Outdoor Channel. Most report they’ve also ended up saving some money by researching their TV delivery systems. Here’s hoping you are now hooked up and ready to join us Saturday night.

For those with DirectTV, all it takes is a simple call and a request to add the specific channel to your subscription! Should take only a few minutes and you'll be set!

Definitely worth the $2 a month!

Hey Jim, any plans to see you in High Definition anytime soon?

DishNetwork also offers the Outdoor Channel (153) a la carte.

No high def for us for a long time. Three reasons:

1) While the Outdoor Channel has a high-def secondary channel, it's virtually impossible to get connected to see it. Dish and Direct TV don't offer it.

2) Gun People will be the last to buy a 16 by 9 format High Def receiver. "Let me see, $2,000 for a plasma screen, or do I want a ZM Weapons LR?"

3) If we were shooting in high def, in 16 by 9, we'd be cheating the audience out of about 25% of their picture on normal 4 by 3 Televisions. You can see that so called "letterbox format" in the other shows that are shot in high-def. So for the vast majority of the audience you actually get less to see, with no improvement in picture quality.

So, no, no time soon. I'm guessing we'll be 5 years out to high-def making a dent in the market when the delivery systems catch up. Figure it will take nation-wide delivery of Verison FiOS fiber optic competition before it becomes a serious need.

Jim, is there plans for web casting of the shows. My cable company has no plans to offer the ODC, and I would hate to give up my highspeed connection.

I'm getting a lot of e-mail messages like the one below from Nick:

Hi Jim,
Good article on Options for receiving OTDCH. I made the same decision you made to switch to Satellite (Dish) for TV and DSL for internet. Well worth the minor effort involved. I'm saving money each month and have so many more choices. Good to see you encouraging outdoor enthusiasts to overcome inertia and take the action. It's worth it.

Nick's writing about my explanation of TV delivery options on the website:

Options for getting TOC and the Changes Coming for all TV

It's up to you to be sure some monopoly isn't dictating what you can and can not see.

Read Nick above.

And, before you buy the story that cable internet is faster than DSL, I've got Comcast Cable service at the office and DSL at home. The DSL is far more reliable and way faster than the Comcast cable service at the office.

And somewhere I've got an e-mail from a viewer who kept his cable internet service, but dropped cable TV service and switched to Dish Network. The punch line: He says he ended up saving $20 a month.

The cable companies are hoping you won't do the research.

Hey Jim,

I really enjoyed the 3-gun show this week. How about a closer look at some of the toys the open guys are using, specifically I'd like to see those shotgun loaders up close. As a competition pistol guy I like to see the guys shooting stages. That makes the show seem more "sporty", anyhow, keep up the good work.

And, yes, it is sports coverage.

excellent show! Me and the wife were amazed at the speed those guys were shooting.

ETA: I registered for the email news on the sight, how often do you send out? I have not received any emails yet.

What we show you are the very top shooters in the sport. But there are a whole lot of folks shooting these matches who are competing at lower skill levels. It's fun for anybody, but the TV coverage goes to the Grand Masters who are racing for the National titles. Kind of like the difference between Pro Ball and High School Ball.

I send one message a week to the sign-up list. Each will be a bit of news on what we've been doing and then the schedule and the subject of each week's show.
